Visits by young people to Auschwitz-Birkenau

This exhibition's aim is to communicate the benefits of youth visits to the former concentration and extermination camp Auschwitz-Birkenau. The young people involved, from Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Luxembourg, the Netherlands and Poland, all visited Auschwitz-Birkenau in the recent or more distant past.

No academic research has been carried out on the effects of youth education on the Second World War, or of Shoah education. However, these 22 young people express themselves in an impressive and positive way on the long-lasting effects of their visits, and they are representative of many, many others.

They speak of this journey as a very powerful experience, affecting their outlook on life in general, and political and moral issues in particular. The importance of the presence of camp survivors cannot be overstated.

As we enter the last decade in which it will be practically possible for camp survivors to undertake these trips and communicate their experiences directly to younger people, it is important to initiate discussion on a European level on possible ways of supporting and co-ordinating these trips. There is room for further development of effective programmes for different educational levels, and for the planning and facilitation of visits to the camps by multi-national groups.Youth visits to Auschwitz-Birkenau have in general been very effective. They are an excellent tool for the long-term countering of prejudice and racism, but a tool so far underemployed.

The content of this exhibition comes from the young people themselves. We asked the participants to have themselves photographed by a friend, using the disposable cameras we sent out. Each wrote one text of self-introduction, and one text expressing their feelings about the effect of the visit to Auschwitz-Birkenau. The texts shown in the exhibition are in the original languages. English translations can be found in this website. The only changes in the text have been to shorten them, or have resulted from the difficulties of translation.

Bezoeken van jongeren aan Auschwitz-Birkenau

Het doel van deze tentoonstelling is om de voordelen van jongerenbezoeken aan het voormalige concentratie- en vernietigingskamp Auschwitz-Birkenau te communiceren. De betrokken jongeren, uit Oostenrijk, België, Frankrijk, Duitsland, Luxemburg, Nederland en Polen, bezochten Auschwitz-Birkenau allemaal in het recente of verder verre verleden.

Er is geen wetenschappelijk onderzoek gedaan naar de effecten van jeugdeducatie op de Tweede Wereldoorlog, of van Shoah-educatie. Deze 22 jongeren drukken zich echter op een indrukwekkende en positieve manier uit over de langdurige effecten van hun bezoeken, en ze zijn representatief voor vele, vele anderen.

Ze noemen deze reis een zeer krachtige ervaring die hun kijk op het leven in het algemeen en politieke en morele kwesties in het bijzonder beïnvloedt. Het belang van de aanwezigheid van kampoverlevenden kan niet genoeg worden benadrukt.

Nu we het laatste decennium ingaan waarin het praktisch mogelijk zal zijn voor kampoverlevenden om deze reizen te ondernemen en hun ervaringen rechtstreeks aan jongeren te communiceren, is het belangrijk om op Europees niveau een discussie op gang te brengen over mogelijke manieren om deze reizen te ondersteunen en te coördineren. . Er is ruimte voor de verdere ontwikkeling van effectieve programma's voor verschillende onderwijsniveaus, en voor de planning en facilitering van bezoeken aan de kampen door multinationale groepen. Jeugdbezoeken aan Auschwitz-Birkenau zijn over het algemeen zeer effectief geweest. Ze zijn een uitstekend instrument om vooroordelen en racisme op de lange termijn tegen te gaan, maar tot dusver een instrument dat onderbezet is.

De inhoud van deze tentoonstelling is afkomstig van de jongeren zelf. We vroegen de deelnemers om zich te laten fotograferen door een vriend, met behulp van de wegwerpcamera's die we hadden gestuurd. Ze schreven elk een tekst van zelfintroductie en een tekst waarin ze hun gevoelens over het effect van het bezoek aan Auschwitz-Birkenau uitten. De teksten die op de tentoonstelling worden getoond, zijn in de originele talen. Engelse vertalingen zijn te vinden op deze website. De enige wijzigingen in de tekst waren dat ze werden ingekort, of waren het gevolg van vertaalproblemen.
