The Public Library in Doetinchem is 75 years old and wants to celebrate this in an appropriate way. Because the library does not yet have its own design flag, the idea arose to fill this gap at this festive occasion. Because of his flag project for the International Textile Biennale of Lausanne (1992), visual artist Antoon Versteegde was asked to devise a flag project for the situation in Doetinchem as a result.

Of all the impressions during his first working visit to Doetinchem, for Versteegde one was inextricably linked to the building of the Public Library and the remarkable plastic building masses of architect W. Davidse: the typical and original color accents that were applied by means of the large circular surfaces in the building and outside on the facade. These horizontally or vertically intersected circular surfaces in the color schemes orange / red and blue / green originated from the semicircular recesses in the large doors of the two entrances. It was only during construction that it was realized that insufficient light would enter because of these massive doors. It was decided to cut out circles here and the residual shapes thus obtained were hung in the building as decoration. This idiosyncratic logo was repeated on the façade by means of light boxes in the same shape and colors.

For Versteegde these semicircular color spots on the walls of the library became the starting point for the 75 flags because of the 75th anniversary: ​​to the same size, 140 cm, he designed semicircular flags by first cutting out entire circles from flag cloth. They were folded in half at the centerline and attached to a flagpole. This created a double-folded flag with the same color on both sides. In addition, a second round, folded white flag was attached inside each flag as a contrast. With this Versteegde refers to the form of a book, in which the colorful outer flags (in the color red, orange, blue or green) represent the book covers and the white flags, as the interior, represent the pages of the book.

When these four semicircular flags were attached to one flagpole side by side, they would stick together and form a thick pack. You could hardly distinguish the inner flags. That is why the interior is attached to the cover with a number of cords (such as a bound book that slightly loosens) so that it can be moved outwards by every gust of wind. A bamboo stick serves as a counterweight to return the inner flag to its resting place between the cover time and time again. Moreover, these sticks make tapping noises each time, which gives an extra spatial dimension to the image.

The flagpoles themselves also move in the wind: each bamboo pole hangs with three cords from three pillars anchored in the ground and has a sturdy counterweight at the bottom so that the longest end of the bamboo pole with the flag at the top continues to sway in the wind. As a counterweight, a stack of books is used that has been provided with a black coating, so that the books look somewhat artificial, but remain clearly recognizable as books. These collections of books hang dangling just above ground level as a counterbalance to the colorful spectacle that takes place above our heads. The size of the entire work of art is 12 x 12 meters, the height 375 cm.

The park, a stone's throw from the library, was chosen as the location for the artwork, whereby the artwork is directly related to the library, all the more so since the original color circles adorn the building's façade as the logo of the jubilee institution.

At the official opening / ceremonial installation on Friday, April 8, 1994, 75 guests each carried a flag from the library building to the artwork to hang it there in the artwork.

De Openbare Bibliotheek in Doetinchem bestaat 75 jaar en wil dat op passende wijze vieren. Omdat de bibliotheek nog niet beschikt over een eigen ontwerp vlag, ontstond de gedachte om bij deze feestelijke gelegenheid in dit hiaat te voorzien. Vanwege zijn vlaggenproject voor de Internationale Textielbiënnale van Lausanne (1992) werd aan beeldend kunstenaar Antoon Versteegde gevraagd om naar aanleiding hiervan ook een vlaggenproject te bedenken voor de situatie in Doetinchem.

Van alle indrukken tijdens zijn eerste werkbezoek aan Doetinchem was er voor Versteegde één onlosmakelijk verbonden met het gebouw van de Openbare Bibliotheek en de opmerkelijke plastische bouwmassa's van architect W. Davidse: de typische en oorspronkelijke kleuraccenten die werden aangebracht middels de grote cirkelvlakken in het gebouw en buiten op de voorgevel. Deze horizontaal dan wel verticaal doorsneden cirkelvlakken in de kleurstellingen oranje/rood en blauw/groen vonden hun oorsprong in de halfronde uitsparingen in de grote deuren van de twee ingangen. Pas tijdens de bouw werd ingezien dat vanwege deze massieve deuren er onvoldoende licht zou binnenkomen. Besloten werd hier cirkels uit te zagen en de aldus verkregen restvormen werden als decoratie in het gebouw opgehangen. Aan de voorgevel werd dit eigenzinnige beeldmerk herhaald middels lichtbakken in dezelfde vorm en kleuren.

Voor Versteegde werden deze halfronde kleurvlekken op de muren van de bibliotheek het uitgangspunt voor de 75 vlaggen vanwege het 75-jarige jubileum: op dezelfde maat, 140 cm, ontwierp hij halfronde vlaggen door eerst hele cirkels uit te knippen uit vlaggendoek. Op de middellijn werden ze dubbelgevouwen en aan een vlaggenstok bevestigd. Zo ontstond een dubbelgeslagen vlag met aan weerszijden dezelfde kleur. Bovendien werd binnen in elke vlag als contrast nog een tweede ronde, dubbelgevouwen witte vlag bevestigd. Daarmee verwijst Versteegde naar de vorm een boek, waarbij de kleurige buitenvlaggen (in de kleur rood, oranje, blauw of groen) de boekenkaften verbeelden en het witte vlaggen, als binnenwerk, de pagina's van het boek voorstellen.

Wanneer deze vier halfronde vlaggen langs elkaar aan één vlaggenmast zouden worden bevestigd, zouden ze aaneen kleven en een dik pak vormen. Je zou de binnenvlaggen nauwelijks kunnen onderscheiden. Vandaar dat het binnenwerk met een aantal koordjes aan de omslag wordt bevestigd (zoals een gebonden boekwerk dat enigszins loslaat) waardoor dat door elke windvlaag naar buiten toe bewogen kan worden. Een bamboe stokje dient als tegenwicht om de binnenvlag toch telkens weer op zijn rustplaats tussen het omslag terug te brengen. Bovendien maken deze stokjes telkens tikgeluidjes wat een extra ruimtelijke dimensie geeft aan het beeld.

De vlaggenmasten bewegen zelf ook in de wind: elke bamboe mast hangt met drie koordjes aan drie in de grond verankerde pijlers en heeft onderaan een stevig contragewicht waardoor het langste eind van de bamboe stok met de vlag bovenaan blijft wiegen in de wind. Als contragewicht wordt een stapeltje boeken gebruikt dat werd voorzien van een zwarte coating, zodat de boeken er enigszins artificieel uitzien, maar duidelijk herkenbaar blijven als boeken. Deze boekenbundels hangen vlak boven het maaiveld te bungelen als tegenwicht voor het kleurige schouwspel dat zich boven onze hoofden afspeelt. Het formaat van het gehele kunstwerk is 12 x 12 meter, de hoogte 375 cm.

Als locatie voor het kunstwerk werd gekozen voor het plantsoen op een steenworp afstand van de bibliotheek, waardoor het kunstwerk direct in relatie wordt gebracht met de bibliotheek, temeer daar op de voorgevel van het gebouw de oorspronkelijke kleurencirkels sieren als beeldmerk van de jubilerende instelling.

Bij de officiële opening / ceremoniële installatie op vrijdag 8 april 1994 droegen 75 genodigden ieder een vlag vanaf het bibliotheekgebouw naar het kunstwerk om die daar in het kunstwerk te hangen.
