After graduating, I am currently planning on becoming a pediatric and adolescent oncology nurse. Throughout my experiences in clinicals as well as my own personal experience, I have developed a passion for caring for this population. This career choice is something I have decided on this semester because it feels the most right for my personality and it suits my passions. There is such a need for great, technical patient care in this field and I am excited to become a part of it.
Throughout these next three semesters of my college experience, I hope to continue widening my experiences with this patient population and focusing on learning all that I can before I graduate. Additionally, this coming semester, I have my first official pediatric clinical, so I hope that experience will continue to validate my choice in career. I also plan on potentially getting a job or internship working in pediatrics this coming summer gain a deeper understanding of what I would be facing as a pediatric oncology nurse. I am excited to see where my journey takes me!
This time at my internship site has allowed me to see a different side of the healthcare field. As an aspiring nurse, I have learned a myriad of information involving advanced diagnoses and the complications of severe disease processes. In my future career, I hope to continue working with patients that are diagnosed with debilitating diagnoses and assist in advocating for their treatment goals and personal values. In this coming school year, I hope to continue working in research to assist in the meaningful work that this research team does.
Work closely to learn about the implementation of experimental processes in the clinical setting.
Through this internship, I will be learning more about different studies being done in the clinical setting. I have already begun reading several research articles that pertains to the research being done by my internship director. By assisting with data and reading about different studies, I have already begun seeing the application of research findings in the clinical setting.
Increase my own understanding and confidence when it comes to working in the research setting.
There are so many different facets to research that I have yet to experience. In this internship, we are starting at the beginning of the research process and slowly making our way through to the end of the research process. Because we will be able to experience most of research process, I hope to gain more confidence in my ability to assist with research. I have already become more confident in my ability to enter data and read research articles. I hope to continue increasing my knowledge and skillset when it comes to performing research.
Better learn how to analyze, collect, and apply data to practical settings.
I have yet to collect and analyze data, but this will be my next step. In these next couple of weeks, I will be trained on collecting data and then after we have collected the majority of the data, data analysis will ensue. I am so excited to learn more about data analysis and further experience the research process.
As a Junior nursing student, we only had our first clinicals last semester and only for a few weeks because of COVID-19. Although I learned a lot during those clinicals, there is so much more that I need to learn and gain confidence with in order to be a successful nurse following graduation. Through the clinicals of the semester and studying the content in my courses, I will be able to gain more confidence and experience when it comes to nursing skills.
One of my biggest goals this year is to get a job in a hospital to begin gaining experience in the healthcare setting outside of clinicals. By getting a job and going through clinicals in different types of units, I am hopeful that I will determine what type of nurse I want to be and learn more about what I need to do in order to prepare for a career in that specific field. I am in the process of applying for summer internships in pediatrics as a first step and after the summer is over, I plan on applying for other positions to work in during the next school year.
