If you are here, I urge students to consider trying BASS GUITAR. It is the lower sounding guitar and almost every band in the world uses it. Bass guitar can be played in both the HBW and VHS concert band and jazz band. It is a fantastic instrument that more students should try.
Younger students should be looking for 3/4 sized instruments. A full sized instrument is too large for most students below 7th or 8th grade. Even adults can play on a 3/4 sized guitar, but young students cannot function well on a full sized guitar.
A "Classical" guitar has nylon strings. Nylon strings are easier on the fingers for beginners, but they aren't the sound most people are familiar with. They sound fantastic, but the sound most know is the steel string acoustic. If it doesn't specifically list it as nylon or classical, then it is steel. Either is fine.

Any of the guitars listed at Sweetwater will be fine. If you aren't sure because of all the choices, Yamaha makes nice instruments for all levels.
If you choose the electric guitar or bass guitar, you should also purchase an amplifier and a guitar cable, and a clip-on tuner would be a great idea.
ALL ELECTRIC GUITARS - any of these are fine. Pick the one that fits your budget and that looks cool to your child. Be sure you know if you are getting a "mini"(3/4) or "full-sized"
Sweetwater has the best selection of guitars, and if you need guidance, speak with Robby Resnick and he will help you immensely. Please let him know Mr. Morden recommended you talk to him and he will take good care of you.

Boss Katana Mini (very small)
Boss Katana Mini X (very small but slightly bigger)
There are so many options to choose from, but I like both of these amps because they sound good and can run on batteries. Read about them when you click the links and see which is better for you. My recommendation is the Mini X, but it does cost more than the Mini.
