Sunday, September 28- Otter Creek Wildlife Rescue- 10-2 pm. LEOS building owl houses and learning about wildlife rescue. ( 3438 Otter Creek Way- Addison)
Tuesday, September 30- One LEO accompany Lion Randy Bigelow to do vision screenings at Mount Abraham - 10 am-12 noon (X must attend Sept. 8 training)
Tuesday October 9 LEO Monthly meeting-Meeting at MorMac Acres- Hew Haven Vt. Learning about Lippett Horses, working with a mustang and careers with animals.

Saturday, October 11- Catholic Church Cemetery- Helping to straighten up and pack some cemetery stones. 9 am - 12 noon. Teaming with Bass Fishing Team and Schouts

Wednesday, November 19- LEOS ATTEND LIONS- Second Business Meeting of November at American Legion Post # 14- NO MEAL- 100 Armory Lane - Social time 5:40. The meeting begins at 6:00 pm. Speed Conversations with Lions and sharing plans for year.

On Wednesday, December 11, 2024 from 3:15-4:30 the LEOS will have their meeting and holiday party in the upstairs of the Bixby Library, located on Main Street in Vergennes. Use the front entrance.
LEOS are signing up to read to the kindergarten and first graders at Ferrisburgh Central School once a week starting in November 2024
Reading to the Littles - We read to kindergarten and first graders at Ferrisburgh Elementary School, and starting in 2024 will also be going to Vergennes Elementary & Champlain Valley Christian School. Additional literacy projects and outreach is also planned and will be announced soon!
TREX Recycling - We are collecting plastic at VUES, VUHS, CVCS and FCS and turning it into a recycled bench for every 1000 pounds of collected plastic. This program is an expansion of the Vergennes Lions & Vergennes Rotary.
Gardening & Yard Work - We help local people who need help in their gardens whether prepping them, planting, weeding or getting them ready for the winter.
Yarn and Comfort - We collect donated yarn and work with local craftspeople to create lap blankets and items for people recovering in rehabilitation centers.
Community Partnerships - We work with other local civic organizations on projects involving to date: food drives, creation of a new playground, seed catalogs, book drives, monthly fish fries and more.
Building Raised Garden Beds- On Sunday, May 19, 2024 in two different locations in town, LEOS will be working with local contractors to build ten raised garden beds to give to local organizations and individuals who promote gardening for people of limited space or mobility issues. Seven were completed and donated.
Summer Building and Tree Planting- August 2024 will once again find the LEOS partnered at Otter Creek Wildlife Rescue to plant 30 new trees and to construct a flight cage for the owls on site.
American Sign Language- Beginning in October 2024, Vergennes LEOs through a partnership with a local ASL teacher, will offer once a week on line classes to help learn ASL. Once every two months, the ASL instructor will meet with the LEOS in person.
In the New Year and Now- November 2024- January 2025
Reading to the Littles - Beginning in November 2024 and running until May 2025 we will again be going into the schools and reading to children in grades pre-K - grade 1. New this year, we are authoring books on topics including the environment, friendship, kindness, curiosity and the world around us. These books will be published and given to classroom teachers as gifts.
Vergennes Food Shelf Partnership- The LEOS are partnering with the Vergennes Food Shelf and helping to sort food, clean out the attic, paint and work on building improvement and raising funds to help pay for a heat pump and insulation.
Black and White Art Exhibit- Working with the Vermont History Class at Vergennes High School, the Bixby Library and local photographers, the LEOS are a part of a photo exhibition called This Place Called Home, which features images taken by teens to showcase the geography, people, events and environment of the community we call home. It will be exhibited at the Bixby Library from 12/7/2024- 3/30/2025
John Graham Shelter Mural- Currently under construction is a 3X 18 foot mural that will be hung on the exterior of the John Graham Shelter in March 2025. Designed by LEO Sophia Johnson, the mural is being sketched onto plywood by LION artists Pam and Karen Taylor. It will then be painted by LEO Sophia and other VUHS artists.
Speech Contests- LEOS will be participating in the Lions Speak Out Contest- Wednesday, January 8th at the Vergennes Lions Club Business Meeting at 6:00 pm at the American Legion Post # 14. The theme of the speech contest is " Volunteering: Best Way to Leave a Mark." Speech is 5-7 minutes. LEOS will also be participating in the Rotary Speech Contest on Tuesday, January 28, 2025 at the Vergennes Rotary Meeting at the Strong House Inn at 7:45 am. Theme of speech: How can a Rotary-School partnership increase respect, tolerance and understanding of one another." Speech length 5 minutes.
Veterans of Foreign Wars- Patriot's Pen Essay and Voice of Democracy Speech Contest- Two LEOS wrote, recorded and submitted their entries in the VFW contests. The theme for the Patriot's Pen ( grades 7-8) was My Voice in America's Democracy. For grades (9-12) the theme was Is America Today our Forefathers' Vision.
Writing Contests- LEOS are participating in the Daughters of the American Revolution writing contests. Theme for grades 5/8 Enjoying a New Kind of Tea Party. Length 300-1000 words Theme for 9-12 Patriots in the American Revolution- Their contributions. Length- 800-1200 words.
Cleaning Up in the Little City- LEOS helped the Vergennes Partnership raking up the streets of the city, clipping plants, and getting ready for holiday decorations.
A continuing partnership that in 2023 saw the creation of a wildlife soft release corridtor and the purchasing of an owl house is in 2024 expanding to add and build a flight cage.
When a local Lion member had a flooded basement, Leos and their advisors responded to help clear away the mess and debris.
LEO officers attended a Lions meeting and had 80 speed conversations with different Lions about service and community. Making connections to last a lifetime.
Pairing with other organizations that also support the community, local LEOS serve food once a month at the SAL Legion Fish fry. On average 150-160 meals in two hours keep everyone in motion. Also in this photo Lion & SAL Commander Michael Davis who started volunteering with the Legion when he was in middle school.
Working under the guidance of Middlebury Lion Randy Bigelow, LEO Scout Jacobson and other LEOS did vision screening at local elementary schools.
