AbstractThe purpose of this project is to obtain information about the effectiveness of translanguaging strategies in an English Language Learners (ELLs) classroom. There are various schools of thought as to how to best educate the United States’ ever-growing immigrant population and this research hopes to further the argument in favor of a technique called translanguaging, the mixed use of both English and native language. A literature review reveals that, in research about ELLs, there is a special consideration when it comes to math and science content that makes the need for effective strategies even more demanding. Although the impact of translanguaging has been demonstrated in previous research, there are a limited number of studies on the effectiveness and application of specific strategies. This project intends to fill this gap by testing a specific translanguaging technique to see if it results in a better acquisition of science content.
