Last day of class! Thank you for being such wonderful, amazing, and hard-working students. I enjoyed meeting you so much and hope to meet you in person someday in Da Nang.
I really enjoyed the final presentations on your favorite places. I am learning so much about Vietnam.
Videos of your presentation and feedback can be found on Padlet. Congratulations on a job well done and completing the class!
The final exam day resulted in impressive scores! If you want to see the questions again, you can find the final exam at on Google Forms.
The class average was 87.48%, the class median was 92% (that means there was only two wrong answers), and four students managed to score 100%! What great students you are!
We've reached the last module, Module 10: Celebrating Holidays! It was a bit of a rush and there is a challenging text we did not manage to get to. However, I hope you will tackle the article on your own. Reading is one of the best ways to improve your English.
May the 4th be with you if you are a Star Wars fan. Thankfully, Ms. Sa led the class in completing completing Module 9 because I had a terrible bout of food poisoning.
You can find the student readings on Padlet. All the corrections and editing for the written tasks are available on Google Docs.
No class for the long holiday weekend. Have a wonderful Hung Kings Festival!
Module 9: Sightseeing includes important information about your final exam. You can find the task sheet on the Padlet.
Similar to the midterm, the final exam will consist of two parts.
Part 1: A written exam on Thursday, May 11th
Part 2: A two to four minute presentation on Tuesday, May 16th or Thursday, May 18th. Please sign up for the date and time you would like to present. You can find the sign-up sheet for the presentation schedule on Google Docs.
Readings for Module 8, Task 2: Shopping in Danang can now be found on Padlet. Please complete the Post-Task as homework. I would love to know where to buy the most popular Vietnamese souvenirs when I can finally visit Da Nang!
We started Module 8: Shopping in Da Nang and you can find the task sheet on the Padlet. We watched a video about the biggest mall in America, the Mall of America. It was a little long and difficult so if you had problems with the listening, I recommend you listening to the Youtube clip a few more times. The grammar focus were comparatives and superlatives. Study the chart to complete the Task 1 activity.
The weeks are flying by and we finished our 7th module today. Only three more modules to go! You can find the readings for Module 7 on Padlet.
The listening task on Module 7 was a bit challenging for some students but it is a great preview for those interested in taking the TOEFL or IELTS for future work or studies. You can read the script and listen to the recordings as many times as you like as there are links to both on the task sheet.
We also reviewed your directions in the post task writing. Remember, when giving directions to foreigners, it may be better to use landmarks than street names. Vietnamese street names may be difficult for foreigners to spell and pronounce.
We began Module 7: Giving Directions and you can find the task sheet on the Padlet. For pronunciation, the focus was on American vowel sounds and the grammar for this module is about prepositions of place.
Try this tongue twister. It will give you practice with vowels and those problem 's' sounds. How did you do?
"The sixth sick sheikh’s sixth sheep’s sick"
Thank you to the volunteers who participated in today's role playing. Your readings for Module 6: Getting Around can now be found on Padlet.
Students who submitted their writing for the Module 6 Post Task can also find comments and revisions on the Padlet link above.
We talked about various transportation options and worked on the modals of recommendation and advice: should and could. You can find the work sheet for Module 6: Getting Around on Google Docs.
We reviewed the questions from Part 1 of the midterm exam. Midterm presentations have also been uploaded to Padlet. Thanks for teaching me so much about the wonderful Vietnamese cuisine!
Module 6: Getting Around was also introduced and you can access the Padlet here.
Due to my travel delays, Ms. Sa Chau led the class in Part 2 of the Midterms, the presentations about students' favorite foods. Luckily, I was still able to listen in on Zoom to all your wonderful presentations.
The presentations were way beyond my expectations! I loved learning about Vietnamese cuisine and really appreciated the narratives that connected the dish to your personal story--why was the dish important to you. The vocabulary was also exceptional with wonderful adjectives to describe the ingredients and flavors. Everyone did an amazing job and I can't wait to hear your presentations for the final exam!
Students completed Midterm Exam Part 1 today. Most students completed the exam under 45 minutes. The exam covered Modules 1 - 5 and consisted of two vocabulary sections, two reading sections, and one listening section.
Upon completion, the answers and the score were given immediately. The class average was exceptional at 87%. Great job everyone! You should all be very proud of your hard work.
Thank you for all your wonderful birthday e-cards, gifs, and well wishes. It was a big part of making my birthday wonderful!
We quickly covered Module 5: Talking About Food and reviewed the guidelines for the midterm Exam.
Don't forget to study and prepare for your presentation. Have a wonderful weekend.
We focused on vocabulary that is useful for dining in a restaurant. Student Readings from Module 4's Padlet: Inviting Guests to a Restaurant is now available.
We also reviewed the guidelines for the midterm Exam. The Midterm Exam has two parts and will take place next week.
Part 1: March 28 will be a multiple choice quiz on Google Form covering Modules 1 - 5. It is an open book assessment which means you can use your notes and dictionary. However, you must answer the questions yourself. You will have the entire class time to complete the exam, so don't be late because it will take time away from your test.
Part 2: March 30 will be a presentation about your favorite food. See Module 5 task-sheet for a sample script of a 1 - 2 minute presentation.
Hello from San Francisco! We had wonderful volunteers to read Task 2: Making a Business Appointment from Module 3. You can now find student recordings posted on the Module 3 Padlet.
We also started Module 4's task-sheet for inviting guests to a restaurants and will continue to work on Module 4 in next week's class.
There is no class on March 14th as Ms. Sa and I will be traveling. However, the class will be rescheduled to the makeup day at the end of your tentative schedule.
Students can get a head start on the next module, Module 4: Inviting Guests to a restaurant by visiting the Module 4 Padlet. Per one of the student's request, you will also find a new column "Pronunciation Practice" that will focus on a new pronunciation focus for each module starting from Module 3.
We started with the worksheet for Module 3. Students practiced translating sentences with expressions of time from English to Vietnamese. Translations are a great way for students to learn structural and word order differences by comparing English with their native language.
Additional readings have been added to the Module 2 Padlet under Task 3: Role Playing. Additional.
We also talk about a new vocabulary building strategy. Quizlet, is an application that makes vocabulary learning fun with flashcards, games, and other activities. Join the class on Quizlet with this link so you can have access to all the study sets.
Students completed Task 2 on Module 2, "Taking Guests to the Hotel." Worksheet) and we were able to complete one reading.
The upload to the reading can be found on the Module 2 Padlet under Task 3: Role Playing. Additional recordings will be added from next week's lessons.
Students worked in groups today to write questions about guests needs using "Do" for Module 2, Task 1. The questions were thoughtful and very appropriate for a hotel context.
The most common grammar errors were with articles: a/an/the. If you need extra grammar explanation, read the section about a/an/the in this article: https://www.grammar-monster.com/glossary/determiner.htm. For advanced students, read the rest of the article about different types of determiners and quantifiers.
Student readings of Conversation 2 from Module 1 can now be found on the Padlet. Everyone did a wonderful job but there is always room for improving pronunciation, especially those 's' sounds at the end of words.
We also started Module 2 (Padlet and Worksheet), "Taking Guests to the Hotel." We watched the pre-task comedy skit and discussed what kind of amenities we look for when choosing a hotel.
On February 25th, the host institutions held an opening ceremony for this course. I was sad not able to join in person, but thank you to those who shared their photos on Zalo.
We reviewed some of the student emails from Module 1 and the most common error from that task is the use (or lack thereof) of articles such as "a", "an", and "the". Students can find grammar exercises and lessons on the Module 1 Padlet.
There is also a new upload on the Module 1 Padlet of a recording for Conversation 1 so students can listen to the pronunciation and intonation (which words are stressed and where?)
Padlet for Module 2 is also now available for students who need more time to review the tasks and vocabulary. Please look through the worksheet before the next class. Have a wonderful week!
We finished our self introductions today and were happy to welcome some new students to the class.
We also looked more carefully at the Module 1 Tasksheet for meeting and greeting guests at the airport. Please think about the pre-task discussion questions and also post your email from Task 1 to Padlet.
Reminder: Tasksheets are read only documents so in order to write on it, you download it from Google Docs as a pdf or Word Doc. You can also save the document as a copy on Google Docs and save it on your own Google Drive.
Happy Valentine's Day! I know some of you may have had some special plans with your friends or family so thank you to those who made time to join us.
If you happened to miss class, many students finished their self-introductions. It was wonderful to hear how diverse the students are and also to learn about some class goals.
The first Padlet for Module 1: Meeting and Greeting Guests at the Airport is also now available at https://padlet.com/jessyinglee/m1-meet-and-greet-w5l6xk1c9cw16zft.
Welcome to the first day of class. I'm Jessica and I'm so excited to be one of your teachers for the next 15 weeks with Ms. Chau Sa.
Thank you to the U.S. Consulate of Ho Chi Minh City and the Danang Union of Friendship Organization (DAFO) for their introductions and for organizing this course.
