Venice metro project aligns with Italian and European strategies for sustainable mobility by improving connectivity between urban areas across the region, promoting the revitalization of both city centers and suburban areas.

The proposed Venice metro is a fully integrated system: one line connecting Airport, Venice and Jesolo through different environments:1) Airport - Venezia Mestre - Venezia S.L. on existing rail line: frequency 10-15 minutes2) Venezia S.L. - Lido S.M.E. - Punta Sabbioni via new dedicated surface and underground rail: frequency 2-3 minutes3) Punta Sabbioni - Cavallino - Jesolo via new roadside dedicated tram-train lanes: frequency 10-15 minutes

Section 2: underground

Venezia S.L. - Punta Sabbioni

High frequency between Venezia S.L. and Punta Sabbioni.

Underground metro between Santa Marta and Lido.

Underground stations compatible with regional trains.

Underground railway station of the Elisabeth Line in London.

Section 1: upgraded existing regional train lines

Airport - Venezia S.L.

Frequency of 10-15 minutes.

This section of the metro line operates by optimizing existing regional rail lines and upgrading regional trains.

Punta Sabbioni - Cavallino

Tram-trains run on roadside dedicated lanes.

Outside urban areas junctions are equipped with level crossing barriers.

In urban areas tram-trains have priority at junctions with traffic lights.

Punta Sabbioni station has more platforms for all kinds of trains.

Section 3.2: four lanes road

Cavallino - Jesolo

In Jesolo tram-trains run on existing four lanes road.

Express tram-trains reach Jesolo faster, others stop close to camping entrances.

Jesolo station has more platforms for different kinds of trains.

Italy has officially introduced tram-train regulations through the ANSFISA Managerial Decree No. 214 of September 25, 2025, establishing the national framework for their authorization and operation.

Tram-trains are compatible with both infrastructures for regional trains and trams, they can run on both existing regional railways and on dedicated tram lanes at street level on the side of the road.

In urban areas tram-trains have priority at junctions with traffic lights, while junctions outside urban areas are equipped with level crossing barriers.

In urban areas tram-trains run like trams at lower speed and with priority at junctions with traffic lights.

Integration with existing regional train lines

Veneto region connections with Venice Metro

By sending one train every hour from four different regional lines onto the new underground track to San Marco and Cavallino/Jesolo, we can have a train arriving every 15 minutes. This provides frequent service on the section between Mestre and Jesolo without adding more traffic to the crowded bridge over the lagoon.

The proposed metro system uses several types of trains:

1) Tram-trains from regional stations (e.g.: Airport) to Jesolo stopping at most stations (e.g.: San Marco)

2) high frequency metro trains between Venezia S.L. and Lido/Cavallino/Jesolo stopping at all stations

3) upgraded existing regional and intercity trains (e.g.: high speed trains) from Italian railways stations to Venezia S.L., Santa Marta, San Marco and Punta Sabbioni stations.

Frequencies vary by sections:

Airport - Venezia S.L. 15-15 minutes

Venezia S.L. - Cavallino Punta Sabbioni 2-3 minutes

Cavallino Punta Sabbioni - Jesolo 10-15 minutes

Venezia Mestre to San Marco:

one direct train every 15 minutes or a train every 3 minutes with a connection at Venice S.L.

Airport to San Marco:

one direct train per hour or 4 trains per hour with a connection at Venezia S. L.

Jesolo to San Marco:

one direct train per hour or 4 trains per hour with a connection at Punta Sabbioni.
