First Animal Rights March in Taiwan

                About 150 people braved the rain and the cold yesterday (2017/12/17) to attend Taiwan's first ever animal rights march (台灣首發！動物權遊行). Veganism has been growing rapidly in Taiwan over the past decade, especially among young people. 

                People choose to follow a vegan (全素) diet and lifestyle out of concern for the rights and welfare of the animals used to produce meat, dairy products and eggs, as well as for environmental, health and social justice concerns, as the diversion of grain to feed farm animals causes human starvation in the third world. While many vegan food-related events have been held in Taipei in recent years, this was the first one to focus specifically on animal rights. About six hundred people supported the event on Facebook. 

                Participants met at Xinyi Plaza, opposite Taipei 101, at 14:00, and most attendees had previously signed up online. Everyone was given a numbered ear tags (to model how cows are numbered using ear tags) and assigned to a group, with leaders identifiable by their different animal costumes. Leaders of the march chanted animal rights slogans, including “Animals are not a number (動物不是號碼)” through megaphones, and were echoed by “Animals are our friends” (動物是朋友) from the crowd, during the  march through Xinyi Shopping District, one of Taipei’s busiest and most famous shopping districts. Crowds were supportive, with many taking photos on their mobile phones. About a dozen police officers managed the traffic and the crowds, and there were no conflicts reported.

                The march was organized by the Vegan30 (純素30天) group, who hold regular outreach campaigns in Ximending, where they use a television and tablets to show passersby the reality of how meat, dairy and eggs are produced on factory farms, and encourage people to try following a vegan diet for thirty days. Vegan30 grew out of the efforts of Zhihui Wu (吳智輝) to promote veganism in Taiwan; it now has over three thousand supporters on Facebook. The organization’s public demonstrations are similar to those of the Earthlings Experience, an international social movement in which people wearing expressionless masks stand in rows and show the Earthlings documentary, which is famous for exposing the cruelly inherent in factory farming and other examples of exploitation of animals. Vegan30 also now also holds lectures and workshops to educate the public on animal cruelty, and to support people in adopting a vegan lifestyle.

                Notable attendees included Dwagie (大支), a famous Taiwanese rapper who has collaborated with the likes of NAS, the Dalai Lama, and the President of Taiwan; Gao Xiuzhong (高秀忠), CEO of the International Vegan Volunteer Union; Cheng-han He (何承翰) Consultant of Taipei City Government and Advisor of Taipei City Animal Protection Committee; and Sidney Hsu, the founder of Taiwan Vegan Frenzy, the island’s first ethical vegan lifestyle fair.
