Also Protector for me. Actually never really liked Defender, but Protector reintroduced me to it, now I love Defender (and Protector). The vertical screen of the Vectrex is not ideal for this title, but it works, and the slick vector rendition is amazing. I like the little people you are defending in Protector, they're so small they almost look like little LED patterns like on the tabletop games, rather than vectors. $12 on cartridge from Classic Game Creations? Outrageous!

I sent Protector overlay designs to VectrexMad who made professional overlays, and the one who ebay's home-made reproductions. Been waiting to hear back. Seems Protector is a favorite, someone can make money.

Best I have been able to make is inkjet transparency and inkjet window static sticker and layer the two together for richer colors. Best results come with precise cutting to the exact overlay size so it stays in place.

@ iesposta -- If you like Galaxian you should absolutely pick up Vectrexian, it's a phenomenal conversion! The controls and collision detection are spot-on, it looks and sounds great, and there's even a new ending animation (well, more like an intermission really) after stage 20. Also, I just have to say that Kristof's overlays do an excellent job creating the illusion of colored vectors... those vivid colors really make the graphics pop!

Oh, this isn't even a contest. Protector/YASI isn't just the best homebrew Vectrex release, it's one of the best Vectrex games period. You get a sharp conversion of Defender and a port of Space Invaders that looks eerily like the original on a vector display. Can it get any better than that?

It seems like the ROM has been uploaded to archive.org ( -tsunami)... is it possible to get this on a custom cart from Classic Game Creations, or has Tumber specifically asked that no reproductions be made?

My favorite Vectrex homebrew is Gravitrex Plus but Protector/YASI, Vectrexians and Vector Pilot are also great. I like Debris, I,Cyborg and War of the Worlds too... Man, there are tons of awesome homebrews for this console!!!

Being the only vector-based console around, the vectrex video game console ( or milton bradley vectrex arcade system as it is called here in europe ) is really one of my favourite systems te develop for, and i hope i can make the best homebrew vectrex games. Besides a number of vectrex games and vectrex demo's , i have also developed a number of tools, a basic compiler ( VexosBasic ) and even a complete OS ( VexOS ) for the system.

Shifted is an action puzzle game that requires quick thinking and quick responses. You have to shift columns up and down to make combinations of gems on the centre row. The higher the combination, the more points you will earn.

Vectoblox is an exciting puzzle game for the Vectrex arcade system, with no less than 40 different puzzles to solve! The player has to clear each puzzle by shoving all the boxes in each level to their respective target areas. Are you skilled enough to clear all 40 puzzles ???

Color clash is a fun action game people can just pickup and play. The player has to shoot the various gems that are falling down from the top of the screen. The gems are marked with symbols and the player has to match up the symbol on his ship with the symbol on the gems. The player has to clear a number of gems each level. Also there will be plenty of bonus-items to be utilised.

V-Hockey sees you battle in a one versus one showdown on ice for the puck and the most goals. Steal, block, shoot and save your way to victory either against three levels of computer difficulty or another player.

The Climax slideshow is a slideshow featuring the pixelart works of Menno Seegers (created between 1993 and 1996). The slideshow consists of a total of 15 fullscreen bitmap images, which have all been handpixeled in Deluxe Paint and then carefully converted to be displayed on the vectrex. I tried recreating the kind of slideshow as they were done in the early 90s (when these images where created), so no fancy effects this time around.

This demo consists of a 3 dimensional landscape rendered in wireframe vector graphics. As a concept for perhaps a future Vectrex game, the display shows a 64x64 map which the player can move freely across, along with a radar at the top of the screen showing the player's position as a white dot against a smaller rendition of the map

More specific to the Vectrex, this is my first serious attempt at doing 3D effects on the console. The demo is the first 'trackmo' styled demo for the Vectrex and contains 5 parts of different graphics effects.(BTW this was my last Vec coding until returning to Vectrex programming in 2005).Click here for more nformation.

This collection had a physical release on cartridge, which has been discontinued with the introduction of the new line of vectrex releases in 2018.

The collection is now available as a free-for-donation digital download instead (see below).

Hello there! My name is Martijn from Revival Studios. When i was younger i used to be active in the demoscene with a group called Logic Designas well as develop games for the Nintendo Gameboy, Gameboy Advance and First generation Mobile phones at Karma Studios.

The heart of the unit is the SpeakJet--an amazing chip with phonetic speech, preset sounds and a five channel music synthesizer. All of these are controlled by the console via a serial interface emulated through the driver software.

If you're developing a new homebrew game for the Atari 2600, 7800, or Vectrex and you'd like to add AtariVox support, we maintain a memory allocation list for games wishing to use the save feature of the AtariVox. Blocks are allocated in 64 byte chunks, useful for saving high score information, game state information, user settings, and so forth. Games can be allocated more than one block if necessary, but we ask that you be efficient in the storage of any data your game must save to the AtariVox, as a limited number of blocks are available.

Please contact us if you'd like us to reserve space for your game. Also, if you've written a game that takes advantage of the AtariVox, please let us know and we'll add your game to the above list, as well as the AtariVox+ manual!

If you want to use the AtariVox+ with an Atari 7800 or Vectrex console, you will need to purchase an appropriate controller extension cable. Original Sega Genesis extension cables work well, and some third-party cables that match the Sega cable may work as well. However, the commonly available Retro-Bits Sega Extension Cable does not work, as the AtariVox+ cannot be plugged into the cable (the fit is too tight). You can also remove the AtariVox+ from its shell, and it will then fit in the 7800 controller port without issues.

The original/official vectrex games were made public domain some time ago and there are some homebrew ones on the internet. The vectrex came with a built in Asteroids-like game called Minestorm. This game is compiled in the binary and can be played if no ROM is found.

The vectrex used screen overlays to simulate color and add some decorations. If you place a PNG image within the same folder of the loaded ROM and both of them are named exactly the same (excluding the file extension) that image is going to be used as the overlay for the corresponding ROM. The image dimensions must be 388x480 pixels and it must be in RGBA mode.

The vectrex controller had 4 buttons and a stick. On the wiimote (hold it horizontally) these are mapped to the PAD, A, B, 1 and 2 buttons. On the gamecube controller these are mapped to the PAD/control stick, A, B, X and Y buttons.

The Vectrex was an innovative home console that never quite caught on during the initial videogame craze of the early 80s. With a high aftermarket asking price, fewer than 30 original games, not to mention its large size and built in screen making shipping one cumbersome at best, it seems like the kind of system that only a true fanatic collector could love.

But the Vectrex has one important thing going for it. There is no other way to experience home vector gaming. You just can't emulate the crisp lines and smooth movements of a vector screen. It is a unique, refreshing experience that kids raised on modern consoles and iPads will still enjoy.

Unless you are a completist, you can skip the crazy expensive 3D imager and light pen. But do yourself a favor, pick up this system, some of the standard, common games and a few homebrews, you won't be disappointed.

I recently bought a 72 game multi-cart, which is a (bare PCB for a) single Vectrex cartridge that contains every Vectrex game ever released, plus a bunch of homebrew stuff. ("Custom bankswitching design allows for different size ROM images"! Hardcore.)And one of those homebrew demos on the cart is... well... this is a thing that happened:

Let's re-cap: a cartridge manufactured in 2008, containing a demo written in 2001, which is a vector-graphics reproduction of an internet meme from 2000, based on a video game from 1989, running on a video game system manufactured in 1982.This is a very strange dojo.
