Type 1 diabeties is an autoimmune disease in which the body attacks the cells in the pancreas that produce insulin, leading to little or no insulin production and causing high blood sugar. As such, type one diabetics must regulate their own blood sugar by checking their blood sugar regularly and injecting themselves with insulin.
This insulin is vital for survival. A type one diabetic can only survive a couple of weeks at most without insulin, sometimes only days. A lack of insulin can lead to severe dehydration and a coma before eventual death. There are other very severe symptoms as well, such as blindness, kidney failure, and nerve damage from a consistently high blood sugar level. Rationing insulin can be problematic for health as well and cause these same severe side affects due to the presence of high blood sugar for too long.
