MODULES
Module L01/A : Foundations of Group Theory and Molecular Symmetry
Module L01/B : Representations of Point Groups & Corresponding Theorems
Module L01/C : Applications of Group Theory to Molecular Spectroscopy
Module L01/D : Applications of Group Theory to Chemical Bonding
Module L01/E : Applications of Group Theory to Organic & Inorganic Chemistry
Outcome of the course:
To show molecular symmetry operations form a group and can be characterized by fundamental representations of groups known as irreducible representations. Apply the great orthogonality theorem to derive point groups and illustrate its use in the applications in crystal field theory, pericyclic reactions and molecular spectroscopy.
Lectures in brief:
The concept of groups, symmetry operations and symmetry elements in molecules, matrix representations of symmetry operations, point groups, irreducible representations and character tables.
Great orthogonality theorem and its proof.
Application of group theory to atomic orbitals in ligand fields, molecular orbitals, hybridization.
Classification of normal vibrational modes, selection rules in vibrational and electronic spectroscopy. Woodward-Hoffmann rules.
Target Group:
Under Graduate, Post Graduate and Research Students of Chemical Sciences and Faculties.

In this video lecture I am demonstrating the abstract group theory. I will be using a VBA coded Microsoft Excel based game called GMT Constructor Game which you can use to construct Group Multiplication Table in a more interesting way. I will also be using a program called "matMatch" that I had developed for matrix product computation and comparison with existing matrices in a GMT. I am sharing both of them here. Go through my lecture first and then download these programs.
Topics Covered: the defining properties of mathematical groups, finite and infinite groups, Abelian and cyclic groups, group multiplication tables (GMT), similarity transformation, subgroups & classes in a group.
This video demonstrates the basic terms in group theory - symmetry elements and symmetry operations with the help of animations. (Animation Credit: http://symmetry.otterbein.edu/ )
