Description of Events

Technique Tidbit

How do you...on the viola? This question and more will be covered in two short 30 minute group technique sessions.

Beginners Mash Up

Just starting on the viola? From 11-12pm, less experienced violists will have a class all to themselves, exploring more about the viola while playing games.

Masterclass

Masterclasses are mini public lessons. A "master" teacher offers insights and advice to each student in front of a room of visitors. Pre-registration is required at Violapalooza to perform but everyone is open to observing.

The Andrea Priester Houde and Molly Wilkens-Reed masterclass is open to advanced high school and college level students only. Participants interested in performing need to contact Ayn Balija at atb3y@virginia.edu with the piece they would play during the masterclass and their private teacher name and contact information by Thursday, February 1. You will be notified of participation on 2/3. Pianists are not required.

All students wishing to perform in any masterclass MUST register in advance.

Eurhythmics

Can you feel the beat? I-Jen Fang and Ayn Balija will introduce Dalcorze Eurythmics as an interactive way move to rhythm, feel the structure of music, and develop musical expression using movement. This training uses all of the senses especially kinesthetic leading musicians to gain physical awareness and experience music in a new and potentially deeper way. This interactive class will have you experiencing music in a new way.

Viola Ensemble

Viola Ensemble is an orchestra of Violists! Special music has been composed or arranged for this group and we will play through and perform a few pieces on the recital at the end of the day. This year, we will pieces for beginning, intermediate, and advanced students. Your placement will be determined by your application answers.

All pre-registered participants will be able to access the music by 2/10 and sheet music will be provided on the day.

Violapalooza Ensemble

After a day of ensemble rehearsals and viola inspiration, the day will end in a performance!  The Violapalooza Viola Ensemble will perform a short concert of works showcasing all the excellent work done in a day.

What should I bring with me?

Bring your pencil, music, and of course, viola. A snack will be provided but feel free to bring food and drinks to eat in between events. All students under 18 should bring their own lunch but those over 18 may leave the building for lunch.

How much does it cost?        Free!
