FAQs

Welcome to VIOLAPALOOZA!

When should we arrive?

Please try to arrive a little before registration begins in the lobby of Old Cabell Hall at the University of Virginia. The days activities will begin right after registration at 9:00am!

If I pre-registered do I still need to arrive early?

YES! You will still need to:

    -check in/register

    -find room locations

    -have questions answered

Can I participate in the day without having pre-registered?

Yes, registration is available on the day until 9:10am. While performing in a masterclass will not be possible, there will be a special topics class and ensemble opportunities to fill your day.

Parents of younger students may feel free to stay with their child throughout the day, but ample supervision will be provided.

When do I find out about my participation in the Piester Houde and Wilkens-Reed masterclass?

Those who have email to participate in the masterclass will be notified by 2/3 if they are chosen. Pianists are not required.

What goes on in a masterclass?

A masterclass is a short, public lesson. The student participant comes prepared to play a piece for the guest master teacher. The teacher provides comments and constructive feedback to the student and the audience. This feedback shares insights on how to not only play the specific work but useful considerations when playing the viola including ideas about technique in the right and left hand, tone, rhythm, musicality, and intonation.

The "lesson" is about 20 minutes long. The public will include others who are also playing in the class. Typically the performer also brings a pianist, but will not be for this class.

Will a pianist be available for me to use?

No, all masterclass participants will bring their own pianists.

When will I receive my music for my viola ensemble?

Viola Ensemble music will be available to participants based on when their level online by 2/10. Printed copies of the music will be provided on the day, but participants will be able to practice their parts in advance.

What should I wear?

Students may dress casually for most of the events. If you are participating in the masterclass, please dress nicely such as business casual.

Where do we park?

Parking is available in the Central Grounds Garage (400 Emmet St S, Charlottesville, VA 22903) using the Park Mobile app. Free parking may also be available in the C-1 lot. Leave more time for parking than you think. Spaces are often limited and it may take you time to walk to the building. Can parents attend the event?

All parents are invited to watch the days activities but it is not required. Charlottesville has some wonderful shops, coffee houses, and outdoor activities if the weather is nice.

You are invited to attend the Violapalooza Ensemble and Faculty Recital at 3:30pm. You can see and hear the musical accomplishments of your child as they perform in an all viola ensemble as well as enjoy the solo side of this rich instrument.
