Varun Gulshan

I am a collection of electrons, protons and neutrons, currently working at Google as a Staff Research Scientist.

I currently lead the Earth Observation Sciences team, that is part of the Applied sciences effort within Google Research. Our team's focus is to use Machine Learning and Earth Observation imagery to solve Geoscience research questions, motivated by applications in climate mitigation and adaptation. Previously at Google, I was the Engineering co-founder of the Medical imaging team within the Google Brain healthcare effort (incubated within Google accelerated science), and part of the team that built the first version of Google cardboard. I joined Google through the acquisition of Flutter, a 6 member startup building computer vision technology for gesture recognition.

I completed my PhD in Computer Vision and Machine Learning from the Visual Geometry group at the University of Oxford, and a Bachelors in Computer Science from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi.
