Food choice of Caenorahbditis elegans, a round worm with a robust chemosensory system endowed with over a thousand G protein coupled receptors. Madhubani art by Varsha Singh.
Olfactory capacity of C. elegans is as elaborate and extensive as human's. Aided by G protein coupled receptor, a large number of offensive and attractive odors are sensed by C. elegans resulting in a robust chemotaxis response. Madhubani art by Varsha Singh.
Excess calories are stored as neutral lipids in lipid droplets in C. elegans intestine. When worms are infected with pathogens such as Gram positive cocci, lipid droplets are rapidly depleted fuel immune response. This process if termed immuno metabolism. See Dasgupta et al., Infec Immun 2020.

Human lungs colonized by corona viruses. Madhubani art by Varsha Singh.
