Parents to school! -project
(2018-2020)
The aim of the project
The aim of the project "Parents to school!" (2018-2020) is to develop a model for education, integration and employment for immigrant parents in Finland. Model consists of Finnish language and basic mathematics studies in comprehensive school, and parents learn how to integrate better in Finnish society.
The project gives new possibilities for immigrant parents for socializing and communicating with Finnish people. At the same time, parents learn how to support their children with schoolwork and get to know their teachers. During the project, parents also get to know their own residence and the services for families. The parents get information what the Finnish daycare and school system is like.
The project activities are in two phases. In the first phase, parents study Finnish language and basic mathematics with their children in comprehensive school. Parents go through language and skills assessments. After this, the immigrant parents start their practical job learning in a real working environment. Language studies go together with the job learning. In addition to the new education model, this project aims to improve also the tutoring and cultural skills at the work places. Project increases the ability to work with people from different cultural backgrounds and gives information of cultural sensitivity. This helps the immigrant parents to achieve good learning results. Language skills enables parents to enter vocational studies and/or working life after this project.
This project gets its finance from Finnish National Agency for Education and the project is owned by the city of Vantaa. Learning centre Careeria coordinates the education of the immigrant parents at the project.
