FAQ:
Q: "Do you have a typical cooldown you'd hold full marks for SC? Sometimes I get full marks and SC is still on cooldown and I hesitate thinking if whether to Runeburst it or just wait for SC."
A: Generally, if SC is coming off cooldown in 2-3 seconds, you can just do small filler like Leaping Slash and Leaping Slash reset skills. If SC cooldown is over 4 seconds though, I would probably just go ahead and Runeburst as you can build 7 runemarks up fairly quickly.
Q: "How do you get good at valk? Guardian Bams to practice rotation?"
A: Practice and experience make a good valk. For a pure sandbag boss to exclusively practice your rotations, use the Training Ground in Highwatch. If you deal too much damage, simply take off all your gear besides your weapon, gloves, chest, necklace, earrings and mask (brooch and circlet are optional). This way you keep your attack speed and mana regeneration while intentionally shaving your damage quite a bit. Guardian Bams are a decent way to get a feel for any class as they do a mixture of sandbagging and moving. If you wanted to practice up to a certain level, see if there are any lower tier dungeons that mirror higher tiered dungeons, because the thing with TERA is that they LOVE to recycle monsters. For an example, I recommend Red Refuge to literally every new valkyrie player I meet and take under my wing. The first boss is pretty much a sandbag while the second boss is still a sandbag but has mechanics that you can practice dodging while trying to continue your rotation. The last boss is a mirror of AQ's last boss and will actually punish you if you mess up his mechanics.
Q: "If boss sat still I feel like I could do the rotation fine but when I need to run away or do something... when I come back I forget where I was in the rotation."
A: While the rotation is generally the most efficient, not every boss is a sandbag. Fluid rotations (with the same gear) only make up a percentage of valk - improvisation, general RNG and even your party are other percentages of the Valkyrie that finish our equation. If you are trying to improve your improv game, study your skills in depth and learn how they function and try to recall which scenarios put you in a funk. Use your experience as well as the many skills in the Valkyrie's arsenal to devise an optimal course of action to get back on track.
Additionally, make sure you are giving yourself a fighting chance as positioning is a big key as a melee damage dealer. If the boss is about to attack from behind, move to the side of the boss instead. Try to predict the boss's movements and be in a spot that you think is the safest to continue dealing damage - especially if they start a mechanic where they WILL move. The guardian boss "Vehemos" is a good example as when he jumps back, a lot of times, I will go ahead and use Shining Crescent backwards from where he starts and to the side of where he lands. The reason being that sometimes, when he jumps backwards, SC will connect me to the boss earlier than I wish it to and so I will lose movement on SC. Using SC to the side of the boss allows me to finish my movement and puts me in his "safe-from-knock-up" space so that I can use the final hit of SC without having to dodge, Backstab or reposition. See Skating in the Basics section of the guide.
Q: "I always feel like I waste too much time dodging mechanics and my damage drops off."
A: One of the easiest ways to spot a new valkyrie or even just a new player in general is that they will dodge excessively and use all of their i-frames. Ironically enough, these players usually end up dying the most in the fight even though they dodged the most because they wasted their i-frames needlessly and then the boss hits them with something stronger. While it seems counter-intuitive, you want to continue dealing damage even when getting attacked if at all possible. You want to save your dodges for things that will actually kill you and take smaller attacks to the face. You have a healer in the party for more than just buffs and debuffs. Additionally, as I stated in the previous comment, give yourself a fighting chance as positioning is a big key as a melee damage dealer. Some fights can be pretty chaotic, but try to have some sense of situational awareness and put yourself in areas that you think are semi-safe to deal damage from. See Skating in the Basics section of the guide.
Due to the sheer importance of this skill and its contribution to our overall damage, we will abuse both resets with Twilight Waltz, Ragnarok and Godsfall and reduced cooldown with Ragnarok and Godsfall. We will also stop whatever we are doing to land this skill immediately off cooldown.
Due to its high damage and ability to reset Shining Crescent, we will generally use this skill off cooldown. It is important to understand how this skill functions to use it correctly. A lot of newer valks see the skills timer and rush through it instead of taking advantage of its effects. Always abuse the free Shining Crescents, runemarks and the pure damage. Don't waste any of it.
Although the skill has a very low physical modifier of just 20%, its magical modifier is extraordinarily high at 280%! When paired with Gungnir's Bite, Dreamblaze and occassionally even Dark Herald's glyph, this skill performs at top tier levels. One mistake I see a lot of newer valks and even some veterans do is going out of their way to stack Dreamblaze before casting Runeburst. In reality, there are very few times where going out of your way to stack Dreamblaze performs better than just Runebursting. The reason for this is that 1 stack of Dreamblaze on 2 separate Runeburst performs the same as far as increased damage as 2 stacks of Dreamblaze on 1 Runeburst.
For the following example we'll round Runeburst's base damage to 1000 and Dreamblaze to 10%
Example1:
1000 + 10% = 1100 x 2 = 2200
1000 x 2 = 2000
2200-2000 = 200
DPS increase of 200
Example2:
1000 + 20% = 1200
1200 - 1000 = 200
DPS increase of 200
Although the skill doesn't seem like it'd be that great, we end up using it a lot and it crits fairly often. Generally, you'll use this skill before most of your Shining Crescents.
We use this skill quite a bit in every rotation that we do due to how fast it is and hard it hits for a filler skill. This skill adds both a runemark and a stack of Dreamblaze.
We use this skill a lot due to it being our main buffer skill, while also resetting Leaping Slash and adding a runemark. While hpm's are certainly important, the buff duration is generally more important. Try and keep a balance of uptime on its duration as well as using it for filler.
We use this skill a lot due to it being the most versatile runemark adding skill. Pretty much all of our rotations use this skill to some degree.
Due to this skill's effects, we try to use this during our burns. While the extra power, attack speed, reduced cooldowns, 20% extra damage to Twilight Waltz and reset of Twilight Waltz is nice, the skill itself hits about as hard as 2 complete Shining Crescents. Because this is our hardest burn phase skill, we want to start the fight with this and get as many Shining Crescent and Twilight Waltz hits in it as possible.
Due to the long animation cast of this skill and semi awkward cooldown even with the glyph, we don't use it as often as Ground Bash. This skill grants 2 runemarks and a stack of Dreamblaze and hits pretty hard.
Due to this skill granting 2 runemarks, resetting Leaping Slash, having acceptable filler damage and being a ranged skill, this skill is pretty decent overall.
While the skill generally does hit pretty hard being that of mainly a magical amplifier, the skill has the longest cooldown in the valkyrie's arsenal: a whopping 6 minutes! This skill still functions fairly decent due to its Skill Advancement's Focus specialization. You want to use this skill to gain a full Ragnarok Points Gauge either immediately after Godsfall or right before the boss is going to enrage.
