Below this box reflects what we did in Unit 1 this year (2018-2019). There are some things we want to change. Next year our plan for the general outline of this assessment is:
1.1 - Balloon car - the focus really is just the engineering design process, this car can then be used or referenced in 1.2
1.2 - Newton’s Laws
1.3 - Asteroid Collisions
Unit 1 in 8th Grade is about how objects move and collide. The central theme in this unit is asteroid collisions. In studying this we will see how there is evidence of past asteroids collisions in the fossil record, learn how Newton's Laws and the Law of Conservation of Energy explain why some asteroids are more devastating than others, and analyze the impact size of asteroids with different speeds and masses.
In these assessments we address the standards:
For each assessment below the link will take you to a page about that assessment including the student document and teacher document as well as notes about the assessment parts and other activities.
In this Assessment students construct a balloon powered car and begin to explore Newton's Laws of Motion.
MS-PS2-1
MS-PS2-2
MS-ETS1-1
MS-ETS1-2
MS-ETS1-3
MS-ETS 1-4
In this assessment students work on applying Newton's Laws of Motion to their previous investigations with the balloon car and develop their own investigations of these laws.
MS-PS2-1
MS-PS2-2
In this assessment students collect and interpret data about real asteroids, explore the relationship between mass, speed, and energy, and then work to propose a solution to prevent an asteroid impact.
MS-PS2-1
MS-PS2-4
MS-PS3-1
MS-PS3-2
As we change and adapt how we choose to address the standards some assignments no longer fit into our assessment plans, but could be used in the future if we changed our approach. Below are some of those activities.
A small assignment where students observe the fact that without air resistance all objects fall at the same rate. Then they explore how different shapes change the air resistance and thus fall speed.
Students explore simulations from PhET to see the impact of Balance and Unbalanced forces and Mass.
