dis·ci·pline - the practice of training people
I believe we have the unique ability, as educators, to teach and train students how to achieve goals and how to work through challenging situations in socially and emotionally healthy ways.
At my campus, this means:
We seek understanding and restoration, not punishment.
We focus on training and teaching students how to meet expectations as opposed to simply repeating ourselves in frustration (we’ve all been there).
We value restoration and growth over punitive consequences.
Students understand that actions have consequences, but beyond that, they know that we CARE.
We seek multiple strategies to intervene for a student experiencing behavioral challenges in the same way that we seek multiple strategies to intervene academically.
Students are taught how to set goals, and they learn the strategies and ethics needed to accomplish these goals.
