The competent teacher understands the diverse characteristics and abilities of each student and how individuals develop and learn within the context of their social, economic, cultural, linguistic, and academic experiences. The teacher uses these experiences to create instructional opportunities that maximize student learning.
The structured teaching strategy video is designed as a resource for teachers to explain a teaching strategy that can be implemented for students with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). The teaching strategy talked about is called the Structured Teaching Strategy and can be used to best teach students with ASD. The video was produced to give an in-depth description of this strategy. The Teaching Strategies Handout is a brief overview of the structured teaching strategy video that can be used as a summary of the specific teaching strategy.
This artifact meets performance indicator 1J which states that the competent teacher “differentiates strategies, materials, pace, levels of complexity, and language to introduce concepts and principles so that they are meaningful to students at varying levels of development and to students with diverse learning needs.” Using the structured teaching strategy and adjusting the five components of it to best fit the diverse student and their needs is strategy differentiation. When this strategy is implemented effectively, it means that the materials, pace, and levels of complexity will be differentiated as well. This will ensure that the learning concepts are meaningful to students with diverse learning needs. It also meets performance indicator 1L which states that the competent teacher “uses information about students’ individual experiences, families, cultures, and communities to create meaningful learning opportunities and enrich instruction for all students.” Since a unique blend of the five components of the structured teaching strategy would need to be selected for the diverse learner, this would be done through the use of information about the students’ individual experiences. Meaningful learning opportunities would be built from the experience of the learning strategy, as this would ensure that the diverse student would receive enriched instruction and maximized learning.
Creating this video helped me to learn about the Structured Teaching Strategy that can be used for students with ASD. I learned the many different parts to this strategy and how to implement them effectively and also why it works well for teaching students with ASD. Overall, I am now better equipped to teach students with diverse learning needs in order to maximize learning.
The teaching strategies paper is a paper written to explain some teaching strategies that can be used in the teaching of students with Intellectual Disabilities. I researched strategies that can be used in the teaching of students with intellectual disabilities and found five separate strategies. For each strategy, I described what the strategy was, a possible lesson objective that can be implemented with the use of the strategy, why the strategy would work for these students, and a personal reflection about the use of the strategy. The paper was produced to explain five separate teaching strategies that teachers could use to help students with intellectual disabilities learn best.
Through writing this paper, I was able to understand different teaching strategies for students with Intellectual Disabilities. One of the performance indicators met by this artifact is indicator 1H which states, “the competent teacher analyzes and uses student information to design instruction that meets the diverse needs of students and leads to ongoing growth and achievement.” Implementing these strategies would mean I would have analyzed and used student information to design instruction that meets the diverse needs of students. It would also lead to ongoing growth and achievement for the students because the strategy of using visual schedules would help the child become more independent as they would eventually be able to follow the schedule themselves.
Writing this paper helped me to learn some strategies that can be used to teach students with intellectual disabilities. I feel better equipped to teach these students now that I know some strategies that can be implemented in order to best reach a student with intellectual disabilities. I learned how many different things can impact the learning of a student with this disability.
