VALERIA LENTINI GILLI
PhD in Economics. Development Economics.
I am a Professor and Researcher at the School of Economics, University of Costa Rica, and currently serve as an Economist for the United Nations High Commisioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in Central America, Mexico and the Caribbean.
My research intersts lie in development economics, with particular focus on the economics of education, poverty, inequality, migration and labor markets. Within the Economics of education I am interested in inequality arising from resource allocations, socioeconomic background, technological change (see this interview), and gender norms (see my TedEx).
I joined academia at University of Costa Rica in 2014 after working for more than 15 years in the private sector as a Regional Director of Quantitative and Qualitative Market Research, leading projects for public and private organizations, NGOs, academia, and media across Latin America, the Caribbean, and the United States.
I have worked as a consultant, project director and lead researcher at the State of the Education think tank of Costa Rica, the Institute of Research in Economic Science, J-PAL LAC, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), UNHCR, and other organizations.
I hold a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Zaragoza (Spain); an MA in Development Economics from the University of Sussex (United Kingdom); and a BA from the Universidad Nacional (Costa Rica).
