Vacances is a collective of eighteen Korean picturebook artists who come together each year to create and publish experimental books inspired by Korean folktales and cultural heritage. Founded in 2019, the project began with a simple idea: what would happen if picturebook artists gathered to play, experiment, and create beyond the expectations of the publishing industry? While the world of picturebooks is full of possibilities, books produced within conventional publishing often remain constrained by practical and commercial considerations. Vacances offers a different space—one that is freer, more spontaneous, and open to risk.
Drawing from an inexhaustible source of traditional stories, the artists reinterpret familiar narratives through unexpected visual languages, innovative formats, and unconventional materials. The project is grounded in the belief that the oldest stories can inspire the most contemporary forms of expression. A new collection of Vacances books is launched annually at the Seoul International Book Fair, where the artists meet readers directly and share and sell their books in person.Through collaboration, artistic freedom, and direct engagement with readers, Vacances continues to expand the boundaries of contemporary picturebook practice.
‘바캉스’의 시작은, 그림책 하는 사람들이 모여 뭔가 재미있는 궁리를 해보자는 것이었습니다. 무궁무진한 그림책의 세계, 하지만 기존 출판시장 안의 그림책들은 다소 반듯하고, 깔끔하고, 알게 모르게 제약이 있지요. 휴가처럼 어디론가 떠나볼까-
산만하고,
자유롭고,
날 것 같은 작업을 휙휙 던지며
멍석 깔고 한 번 놀아보자- (아니, ‘바캉스'답게 비치타월 깔고 따가운 햇볕 한 번 쬐어보자 - )
이렇게 그림책 작가 여럿이 모였습니다. 다들 본업에 바쁘신지라 모이기가 쉽지는 않았지만, 꾸준히 만남을 지솟하며 함께 갑니다.
멍석 깔고 노는 시작은 옛이야기를 모티브로 하는 ‘전래 프로젝트’입니다.
퍼내고 퍼내어도 끝없이 솟아나는 이야기의 원천, 우리 옛이야기는 다양한 모습의 그림책으로 만들어져왔습니다. 누구나 아는 이야기이기에 더 다채롭게 해석, 변주될 가능성을 품고 있겠지요.
호흡은 짧게, 깡충깡충 튀게,
폐부 깊숙이, 그러나 즐겁게,
내용의 변주, 형식의 실험,
그림책을 다루는 이들답게 이야기와 이미지가 어우러진 짧은 한 판,
어쨌든 책! 얼쑤!
바캉스는 계속 이어집니다.
