Y Math is a lecture series on the use of mathematics beyond academia. It features talks by professionals who explain how they use mathematics in their work. They are dedicated to undergraduate students, in particular to those wondering which career paths are available after a mathematics degree.
In the Fall 2025, the talks take place in ECE 105, on Fridays 3:30-4:30PM. All are welcome!
Chinmay Nirkhe is a faculty member in the Paul G. Allen School of Computer Science & Engineering and a member of the CS Theory and Quantum CS groups. Before UW, he was a research scientist with IBM Quantum. He received his Ph.D. from Berkeley and his B.S. from Caltech. Nirkhe is somewhere between a mathematician and a computer scientist. His research is at the intersection of complexity theory and quantum computation. In particular, he is interested in proving hardness-of-approximation results and lower bounds on the description complexity of quantum states.
