Underwater exploration creates awareness and knowledge transformation on the lost rich heritage sites mentioned in our epics were not a myth. Here, the project focuses on exploration of the buried objects in Mahabalipuram and Poompuhar shoreline. In Mahabalipuram, It is believed that only one shore temple is in existence out of seven shore temples built. Tsunami struck in the year 2004 pulled back the water from shore. People then witnessed the presence of wall like structures in the ocean. Archaeological Survey of India(ASI) then conducted explorations which brought light to Huge wall structures and some of the small structures around 5-8m depth. Similarly the well-known Poompuhar which was highly rich in heritage and culture will also be excavated. Hence it is very important for us to preserve our identity and ancient heritage that is submerged in water today. Underwater Submersible vehicle can be used for survey purposes. These captured images are in degradation quality due to the underwater environment. Due to this, the image enhancement method such as Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD) and Xtended Central Symmetric Local Binary Pattern (XCS-LBP), Visibility improvement technique with weighted filter are applied on submersible images to extract the texture feature. On Feature Extraction, Different keypoint detector and mapping algorithms are considered for the extraction of keypoints (features). It is observed that the Scale Invariant Feature Transform (SIFT) with Fast Library for Approximate Nearest Neighbor Search (FLANN) and RANdom Sample Consensus RANSAC have shown superior results. Underwater Image Classification system using deep learning can be developed to classify the submerged objects.
