India is primarily an agriculture-based country and agriculture depends on monsoon. Recently due to climatic conditions monsoon has become uncertain which makes farmer opt for irrigation. This emphasizes farmers to efficiently utilize the scarcely available water for high yield. Hence, this project focuses on introducing a novel idea of using magnetic induction (MI) coils for underground (UG) communication to achieve efficient agricultural data transfer for smart irrigation. MI sensor system prototype including moisture sensor, temperature sensor, transceiver coils, microcontroller etc. for analyzing various agriculture parameters such as soil moisture, air humidity, temperature, soil nutrients. MI sensor system prototype was developed; agricultural data from different parts of the field is collected by MI communication and sent to user’s mobile app through cloud. IoT based app is developed for easy access of field sensor data in mobile. The real field is monitored and their data is recorded through Blynk app. Prototype was successfully tested at in-lab UG test bed and real time field by deploying various sensors at a distance of 1m. In future additional sensors pertaining to soil pH and nutrient content will be included.
