Introducing the 2023 Mexican American Studies Teachers' Academy - A Virtual Experience!

In 2015, the UTSA MAS faculty pioneered the establishment of the MAS Teachers' Academy, marking a significant milestone in the statewide movement to incorporate MAS into the Texas public school curriculum. The Academy, the only one of its kind in the state, is a collaborative effort spearheaded by teachers, scholars, and community members, and presents a week-long summer institute that equips educators with foundational content and support to introduce and teach MAS in Texas public schools.

The theme of this year’s academy is Black and Brown intersecting histories and movements. We believe that social studies primary and secondary teachers in Texas will benefit tremendously from our one-week institute which will focus on the history of Black and Afro-Indigenous communities in Mexico (Veracruz, Oaxaca, Coahuila); the legacies of racialization of Black and Indigenous people in the Texas-Mexico

borderlands; re-storying the Alamo; Black roots of Mexican independence; the South Texas underground railroad to Mexico; Afro-Mexican foodways as cultural retention; Black and Brown civil rights movements and cultural convergences in Texas.

Participants of the Academy will earn Continuing Education Units and enjoy access to a plethora of resources including readings, scholar lectures, workshops for curriculum development, and teacher-led presentations.

We are excited to open registration for the 2023 Mexican American Studies Teachers' Academy! This unique week-long virtual institute promises a host of professional development opportunities for educators desiring to effectively teach MAS in Texas public schools. Our theme this year invites teachers to delve into the interconnected narratives of Black and Brown communities. We'll provide you with essential resources, TEKS-aligned lesson plans, and an understanding of the culturally-rich and historically-significant convergences within these communities.

The Academy brings together a distinguished line up  of scholars, community leaders, and K-12 educators dedicated to supporting fellow teachers in creating and implementing effective MAS curricula for their classrooms.

15 Continuing Professional Education (CPE) credits are available. (3 hours each day)
