BACKGROUND: The selected theme is the Urban Heat Island with the cross-cutting theme of COVID-19. Over 90% COVID cases are in urban areas. The urban areas in India face the problem of overcrowding and lack of open spaces. Both of these factors add to the risk of UHI and COVID-19. The theme caters to enhance inclusive and sustainable urbanization and capacity for participatory, integrated and sustainable human settlement planning and management. One of the strategies to mitigate the UHI effect is increasing the Green and Blue spaces. Further, the issues of water and sanitation directly impact the COVID-19 preventive measures.
The campus aims to deliberate on issues of reducing the adverse per capita environmental impact of cities, including by paying special attention to air quality and municipal and biomedical waste management, specifically focusing on COVID-19 waste management. Further, the campus aims to bring together stakeholders from the government, academic, civil society and the private sector. The use of technology for innovation, information dissemination and risk communication will be explored specifically for the upcoming Smart Cities. In this aspect, this addresses SDG 3 (Good Health & Wellbeing), SDG 6(Clean Water and Sanitation), SDG 9(Industry & Innovation), SDG 11 (Inclusive, Safe and Resilient Cities), SDG 13 (Climate Action) and SDG 17 (Partnerships for Sustainable Development). The campus through its multi-stakeholder partnerships aims for localization of SDGs through implementation of solutions which are local and unique to the area. The campus’s idea on reducing the financial, environmental and public health costs of congestion, air pollution, urban heat island effects radiate with the aims of New Urban Agenda.

The campus theme will be discussed in the three urban labs and one Round table divided in 3 days. Each urban lab will include representatives from the different partner groups. The 1st day will define and outline the theme and agenda of the campus with detailed layout of each urban thinkers’ urban lab and its agenda. Each day, each of the partner groups would meet virtually and discuss outputs and outcomes achieved in the preceding session. The 2nd day is more focused on action-oriented discussion with innovative challenges which require solutions to be proposed by participants. On the 3rd day, the round table session will bring the various partner groups back together to the table to localize SDGs and propose implementable solutions for the action field in focus. This sequence of multi-stakeholder rounds and sector-specific groups shall ensure an equal representation on each group feedback and cross-cutting approaches.
