Leadership & Team

Leadership. The USRDS Modeling project is led by Drs. Damla Senturk (UCLA), Danh Nguyen (UC Irvine), and Esra Kurum (UC Riverside).

Dr. Damla Senturk, PhD. (Contact principal investigator, UCLA) Dr. Senturk is Professor and Chair of the Department of Biostatistics at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Her exptertise includes longitudinal and functional data analysis and varying coefficient models with substantive applications in end-stage kidney disease (ESKD)  as well as a wide range of psychiatric disorders, including autism spectrum disorder. More

Dr. Danh Nguyen, PhD. (Principal investigator, UC Irvine) Dr. Nguyen is Professor in the Department of Medicine at UC Irvine School of Medicine. He has held numerous leadership positions at research centers at both UC Irvine and UC Davis. His expertise includes chronic kidney disease and ESKD, patient outcomes risk prediction models, and clinical trials. He has contributed to novel approaches to dimension reduction methods,  health care profiling, varying coefficient models,  joint modeling, and self-controlled case series methods. More

Dr. Esra Kurum, PhD. (Principal investigator, UC Riverside site) Dr. Kurum is Associate Professor in the Department of Statistics at UC Riverside. Her expertise includes copula-based modeling; semiparametric and nonparametric regression models; model deveopment for longitudinal data and jointly modeling of  mixed outcomes such as survival and longitudinal responses. More copula-based modeling, and semiparametric and nonparametric regression models.

Key Co-Investigators. Key current faculty collaborators (co-investigators) on the project include: Drs. Connie Rhee (UCI, Nephrology) and Dr. Sudipto Banerjee  (UCLA, Biostatistics); previous key collaborators include Dr. Lorien Dalrymple (previously at UC Davis).

Dr. Connie Rhee, MD, MSc. Dr. Rhee is a physician-scientist and nephrologist and leading expert in kidney disease, endocrinology/metabolism, and nutrition. Dr. Rhee is currently the section chief of nephrology, VA Greater Los Angeles  Healthcare System, and Professor  at the David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA. Previously, Dr. Rhee was Professor and Interim Chief of the Division of Nephrology, Department of Medicine, at UC Irvine School of Medicine.

Dr. Sudipto Banerjee, PhD. Dr. Banerjee is Professor in the Department of Biostatistics at UCLA and Senior Associate Dean for Academic Programs, UCLA Fielding School of Public Health. He has held numerous leadership positions, including department chair of Biostatistics at UCLA. His wide expertise includes Bayesian hierarchical modeling and inference and space-time processes, including spatial survival analysis; space-time mapping and analysis of multiple diseases; and modeling massive space-time data.  More
