The change and development of need and focus on the US influence what and how mathematics was taught throughout history. Despite all fluctuation in terms of the advancement of material, word exercises and integration were attempted to be the part of mathematics through the teaching approaches and textbooks. At the very beginning, less realistic mathematical situations were incorporated. However, by time, it was integrated with some pure science subjects and then even broadened to some social science subjects.
Based on several international assessments, the level of mathematical literacy of US students is about the world average. Besides, some research shows the lack of students’ realization of the use of mathematics in their daily life. This altogether includes that there are so many things that the US can improve in mathematical literacy, not students’ achievement, but also students’ appreciation and realization towards mathematics.
