The Substances, Psychosocial Influences, and Risk Investigation Team (SPIRIT Lab) is directed by Dr. Douglas Glenn and conducts research broadly related to the psychological, interpersonal, and systemic determinants of substance use with a particular focus on alcohol consumption.
A primary goal of the lab is to produce research leading to the development of effective substance use prevention and intervention programs that consider individuals’ holistic life experiences. Within this aim, the SPIRIT Lab gives specific attention to substance use motives and the ways in which one’s reasons for using substances are intertwined with their available psychosocial resources.
The SPIRIT Lab aims to create an inclusive and equitable environment within our body of research, interpersonal engagement, and collaborations, regardless of race, culture, ethnic and national origin, gender, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, pregnancy status, ability, age, socioeconomic status, religious beliefs, and values.
We investigate risk factors for substance use and related consequences, by which marginalized populations are disproportionately and uniquely affected. Our research is specifically committed to understanding and combatting the systemic determinants of substance use disparities among at-risk groups of people.
