The Service Experience Reflection (in 3 parts):

WHAT?
  • Identify the service-learning event and/or organization you chose.
  • What local problem/issue does this organization work to help/solve?
  • Do a little research or have a conversation with someone at the organization. How common is the problem/issue you addressed in the WNC (or what are the statistics? Ex: How many homeless, food insecure people, etc.). How does it compare to the statistics for your home town/county?
  • What specific activities did you engage in during this event/at this organization?
  • What new things did you learn as a result of participating in this event? It could be a skill, new knowledge about the problems in WNC, etc.
SO WHAT?
  • In what ways did the experience impact your feelings? Your thoughts? Your knowledge?
  • In what ways, if any, did any of the CURE components (keynote, theme sessions) connect you to or help you in participating in this service-learning event?
  • What impact do you think this service-learning experience will have on your academic career in the Brinson Honors College? At WCU? After you graduate?
NOW WHAT?
  • Describe how you could apply the skills you learned or improved on during this event in future service learning, community engagement, or volunteer projects.
  • How could you integrate your service learning experience this semester into your Learning Plan? Into your career goals? Into your everyday life?
  • What would you like to learn more about related to service and community engagement?
