How to Sign-Up
Complete, or have almost completed, Organic Chemistry II Lecture and Lab.
Find an available lab and meet with faculty during office hours.
Attend chemistry department faculty research seminars.
Typically, but not always, students begin working in a research lab during the summer months.
All majors accepted for research in the department must sign up for at least 1 unit of CHEM 397 Research Methods and Practice during the fall or spring semester.
Synthetic Organic Chemistry – synthesis and evaluation of "turn-off" cytotoxins as a way to increase the tolerability of anti-cancer chemotherapies.
Bioinorganic Chemistry – use of calorimetry and spectrophotometry to quantify and probe metal-specific interactions with antimicrobial peptides for use in therapeutic design.

Computational Organic Chemistry - use of computational tools to solve problems in organic chemistry, with a focus on reactive intermediates and heavy-atom tunneling.

Biochemistry - thermodynamic and kinetic analyses of ATP Binding Cassette transporters — membrane proteins that regulate the cellular intake of nutrients and export of toxins — using a variety of biochemical and biophysical approaches.
Physical Chemistry - high-temperature reactions and spectroscopic characterization of reaction intermediates important to atmospheric and combustion chemistry, especially focusing on biofuel molecules.
Inorganic and Analytical Chemistry - development of lanthanide complexes for prostate cancer diagnosis, and image-guided tumor resection via Magnetic Resonance and Optical Imaging properties.
Caltech WAVES's Program
The WAVE Fellows program provides support for undergraduate students, who are underrepresented in STEM and intend on pursuing a Ph.D., to conduct a 10-week summer research project under the mentorship of Caltech faculty.
Research opportunities in biology, neuroscience, chemistry, chemical engineering, engineering and applied science, geology, environmental science, sustainability, astronomy, physics, nanotechnology, quantum sciences, humanities, social science, and more!
Research-specific information sessions are scheduled starting on November 3. This is a chance to learn more about the program, application process, and meet Caltech faculty in different disciplines.
Applications due Jan 7, 2022.
Program dates: June 13 - August 19, 2022.
ELIGIBILITY
Applicants must be current sophomores, juniors, or non-graduating seniors;
have a cumulative GPA of at least 3.2;
be a US citizen, permanent resident, or have DACA status.
Strong applicants are encouraged to have prior research experience.

Environmental Protection Agency

EPA hires high school and college interns for administrative/clerical positions as well as technical positions in areas such as life sciences, program or policy analysis, and engineering. Most positions have salaries ranging from the GS-2 to GS-7 level. All internships paid by EPA appear in the government-wide USAJobs.gov portal. Most internship opportunities for the summer are advertised in March, April and May but some may be advertised earlier.
