Video Games
Many parents love to point a finger at video games for being a reason of violent behavior, tantrums and just about anything negative their child might do. However it has been proven that video games not only provide an escape from focusing on everything in life, but "large majorities (are) agreeing that video games bring joy through play (93 percent), provide mental stimulation (91 percent) and provide stress relief (89 percent)." - The ESA (Entertainment Software Association)
Ever since I was a child, I have been fascinated by electronics, and I was lucky enough to be raised by an "old school" gamer on the Nintendo NES. The original "Super Mario Brothers", "Mike Tyson's Punchout", and "Duck Hunt" were my games when I was a child. During a very rough time with my parents, I remember that being able to sit down and jump with Mario or take my frustration out with Little Mac in boxing stopped me from breaking down when I couldn't make sense of anything happening during that time of my life. Fast forwarding a little bit, one of my fondest memories of my entire childhood was getting my very own X-Box 360 for my 9th birthday in 2014. Still, to this day, the greatest gift I've ever been given(shout out to my momma). I played every day, anytime I had time. I was still very active in sports and extracurriculars, but nothing brought me joy quite like sitting back on the couch and playing WWE 2K14. Taking the console back and forth between parents and friends, it didn't matter what bad was happening in my life because I had a way to relax and escape the world for a few hours. Every adult needs to decompress after a long day at work, but many times they forget it's not easy to be a kid either. To have the luxury of an escape is huge for improving mental health and has helped me develop noticeable problem-solving skills, aiding me in my journey to become an engineer.
