Active Duty: Full-time service, stationed as assigned, daily operations.
Army Reserve: Part-time service (usually 1 weekend/month + 2 weeks/year), allows you to live where you want and pursue civilian careers or education.
AGR Soldiers serve full-time on Active Duty within Army Reserve units.
They receive the same pay, medical care, and retirement benefits as Active Duty Soldiers.
Enlisted Soldiers: Must be SPC–SFC, eligible for reenlistment, meet physical/medical standards, and complete a 3-year tour before mandatory removal date.
Officers/Warrant Officers: Must be 2LT–MAJ or W01–CW4, meet education and fitness standards, and pass background checks.
Under USERRA (Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act), your civilian employer must hold your job and benefits while you serve.
You may also qualify for continuation of health coverage under COBRA or USERRA protections.
If called to Active Duty for more than 30 days, you and your dependents are covered by military health care (TRICARE).
You may also continue employer-based coverage under COBRA/USERRA if needed.
Yes. Soldiers can transition between components depending on career goals, family needs, and available positions. AGR programs often help Active Duty Soldiers move into Reserve roles closer to home.
Active Duty/AGR: Eligible for retirement after 20 years of active service.
Reserve (non-AGR): Eligible for retirement at age 60 with 20 qualifying years of service
