Undertale's official soundtrack was released by video game music label Materia Collective in 2015, simultaneously with the game's release.[14] Additionally, two official Undertale cover albums have been released: the 2015 metal/electronic album Determination by RichaadEB and Ace Waters,[15][16] and the 2016 jazz album Live at Grillby's by Carlos Eiene, better known as insaneintherainmusic.[17] Another album of jazz duets based on Undertale's songs, Prescription for Sleep, was performed and released in 2016 by saxophonist Norihiko Hibino and pianist Ayaki Sato.[18] A 2LP vinyl edition of the Undertale soundtrack, produced by iam8bit, was also released in the same year.[19] Two official Undertale Piano Collections sheet music books and digital albums, arranged by David Peacock and performed by Augustine Mayuga Gonzales, were released in 2017 and 2018[20][21] by Materia Collective. A Mii Fighter costume based on Sans was made available for download in the crossover title Super Smash Bros. Ultimate in September 2019, marking the character's official debut as a 3D model. This costume also adds a new arrangement of "Megalovania" by Fox as a music track.[22] Super Smash Bros. director Masahiro Sakurai noted that Sans was a popular request to appear in the game.[23] Music from Undertale was also added to Taiko no Tatsujin: Drum 'n' Fun! as downloadable content.[24]

Undertale's soundtrack has been well received by critics as part of the success of the game, in particular for its use of various leitmotifs for the various characters used throughout various tracks.[25][26] In particular, "Hopes and Dreams", the boss theme when fighting Asriel in the pacifist playthrough, a run-through where the player avoids killing any monster, brings back most of the main character themes, and is "a perfect way to cap off your journey", according to USgamer's Nadia Oxford.[10] Oxford notes this track in particular demonstrates Fox's ability at "turning old songs into completely new experiences", used throughout the game's soundtrack.[10] Tyler Hicks of GameSpot compared the music to "bit-based melodies".[27]

So after gifting a copy of Undertale, I was put in the mood to listen to the soundtrack again. Yeah, it's amazing, we all know that, but I noticed a few things on a relisten that kind of blew my mind and really elevated my enjoyment of the tracks.

This happens in other songs too, of course, both in more obvious and more subtle cases, but these were a few of my favorites. Weirdly, the use of theming in this way reminds me a lot of musical theatre, and in particular, Les Miserables-- many songs in the show act as refrains, and contain small nods to songs or melodies that you have already heard in order to build tension or drama (or just to have your brain subconsciously link your current experience to an experience you had earlier). Toby Fox did the same thing in this soundtrack, and it's brilliant.

UNDERTALE Soundtrack is the soundtrack album for Undertale which was released September 15, 2015. It is available for purchase from Bandcamp, Steam, iTunes, and the game's website, and available online for free on Spotify and YouTube. All tracks are composed by Toby "Radiation" Fox with FL Studio 10.[1]

There are a total of 101 tracks in the Undertale Soundtrack, with tracks 78-101 considered "hidden" tracks that are not visible before purchasing the album. There are additional tracks that are not present in normal gameplay or in the soundtrack.

The soundtrack has been widely praised by games press and fans, with Eric Van Allen of GamingTrend saying, "The soundtrack to Undertale reinforces [the game's] earth-shattering moments, knowing just when to rise and fall, and the frequent use of melodies and themes subconsciously manipulates your heart throughout the whole experience. Each song is reminiscent of a time when melodies had to be simple yet discernible, and each piece finds a way to grow outside the realm of chiptunes without losing that simplicity."[3] Jim Sterling praised the soundtrack as "a damn fine collection of unforgettable tunes."[4]

In addition to a ton of memorable and unique character themes, the Undertale soundtrack makes admirable use of leitmotivic development and foreshadowing and even some musical misdirection. It also features some very subtle and clever allusions to to other soundtracks. I thought perhaps we could take a crack at unpacking some of the themes, how they're constructed, what they're trying to say, how they change as the plot progresses, etc.

That could be it, but it doesn't seem to me like something that benefits from musical highlighting. So I started thinking more about what Toriel and Asgore have in common. They're both magic goat-rabbits, they both use fire magic, they were once married, and they both really REALLY don't want to fight you. Could this theme somehow correspond to an aversion to violence? Of all the main characters that you fight in the game, these two are definitely the most peaceful in personality, but compelled to use force for various reasons. Or maybe it's a theme of regret or extreme ambivalence. The lower ostinato part sounds kinda shuffly... indecisive, and I could easily hear the upper line as a howl of protest. Maybe I'm reaching too much but as meticulously-crafted as some of this soundtrack is, I want to believe that this, too, has some subtext to it.

I think it is cool how Toby reused themes. It is common for movies and video games to do that so people have multiple emotions associated with a theme (Aeris' Theme). Listening to the soundtrack from start to finish does not sound that great. Toby Fox did a great job of making songs fit a moment, but the inconsistency of soundfonts and instruments used makes it hard for me to listen to and enjoy. A lot of the sounds have different styles and make memorable melodies, and I can see Mother series influence in this - but what the Mother games did different, is that they used the same sound set for a game which makes it more listenable.

It's pretty cool how the themes are reused during the soundtrack. My favourite has to be how Flowey's theme is turned from a silly cute song into an epic battle theme in Finale. The magic of changing the chord progression (and a few extra notes!).

so it's been a while, but I still haven't stopped thinking about this game and it's soundtrack. Which is why I should add that Undyne's theme is at the very end of ASGORE. I just noticed this recently. GAHHHH
