AMEC 2025 St. Louis

April 21st, 2025.

With over 21 students representing MAPS at 2025 AMEC, this year was one of the biggest our chapter has ever held! Special thanks to URMC OEI for their tremendous support in allowing for students to attend AMEC for another year.

Additionally, MAPS had the honor of receiving Region 9 Chapter of the year for the second year in a row!

Harmony in Health

February 15th, 2025.

First Banquet ever hosted by MAPS. With over 150+ in attendance, the event was a gala gathering that invited all students, faculty and physicians within the local community to attend in order to unite and celebrate the diverse cultures, experiences and achievements of all who are involved.

Journey Through Medicine - GIM

September 7th 2024We kicked off our first MAPS event, Journey through Medicine: MAPS GIM, with a warm welcome and an intro to our mission. Students learned about our support for minority pre-med and healthcare students, and connected over great conversations and refreshments.

MAPS x Greene Center: First Impressions

September 14th 2024MAPS and the Greene Center at the University of Rochester hosted an event that helped pre-health students strengthen their résumés and CVs while learning how to contact Principal Investigators (PIs) for lab opportunities.

MAPSlympics

September 21st 2024We hosted the MAPSlympics, an Olympics-inspired event that explored the mental health challenges faced by minority athletes through activities, discussions, and wellness-focused community engagement.

Breaking Barriers

September 28th 2024During Mel Weekend, MAPS hosted a special open forum with Dr. Terrence Daley-Lindo, an orthopedic surgeon with a fellowship in sports medicine, where students connected, asked questions, and gained insight into medicine, orthopedic surgery, and sports medicine.

Discussion with ER Nurse Manager

October 5th 2024MAPS hosted an open forum with Terri-Lynn O’Gara, ER Nurse Manager at Strong Emergency Department, where students gained insights into emergency nursing, explored nursing as a career path, and had their questions answered by an experienced professional.

Balance YoUR Plate

October 19th 2024 We hosted a wellness event where students learned how to create balanced meals, explored healthy dining options on campus, and participated in interactive activities to support their health and well-being during midterm season.

Smoking’s Impact on Marginalized Communities

October 26th 2024 We hosted a discussion on the impacts of smoking within marginalized communities, highlighting key statistics and exploring how smoking disproportionately affects low-income and underserved populations.

Medical Mayhem 2.0

November 2nd 2024 We hosted Medical Mayhem 2.0, a fun and competitive game show where students raced to name as many items as possible in a category within 30 seconds, offering a competive game to showcase medical knowledge.

Class Registration Insight

November 9th 2024 MAPS hosted a casual schedule session where we had students discussing courses, shared experiences, and gaining insights to prepare for class registration.

Healthcare Under Siege: A Global Crisis

November 16th 2024 MAPS, SJP, and PASA hosted a collaborative event addressing women’s healthcare in conflict-affected regions, focusing on Palestine and Sudan, to discuss the impacts of limited healthcare access and explore ways the community can help.

Diabetes Awareness: Myths, Facts, and Resources

November 23rd 2024 In recognition of Diabetes Awareness Month, MAPS hosted an informal discussion with guest speakers Joan Oserogho, Sunshine Orta, and Dr. Jamie E. Mehringer, fostering open dialogue, breaking stigma, and providing education and support about diabetes.

Understanding Health Inequities: The OBGYN Perspective

December 7th 2024 For the final GMM of the fall semester, We hosted Dr. Turner, an OBGYN, for an insightful discussion on health disparities in the field, exploring challenges, solutions, and ways to advocate for equitable healthcare in minority communities.
