HOMELESSNESS IN NYC
HOMELESSNESS IN NYC
Proposal
The topic I would like to discuss homelessness in New York City. From research that I will later go into detail about homelessness in NYC has some of the highest rates compared to other states down south and in the midwest that are still on going from decades ago. As a policy suggestion to this matter I would highly suggest federal investments being that it seems like homeless people in NYC is not at the top of their lists. There are some groups that support the lives of homeless people but it not really broadcasted so that everyone is aware of the potential beneficial help that people without homes could receive. In my project I will touch more of the policies already established and how they could be revised and additions to them.
Outline
Picture 1: A man in NYC pushing around a cart full of bottles and other recyclables to return them in order to receive money back to buy a drink or food. The cart also has his belongings in them which include other jackets and clothes that he has to bring with him everywhere because he has no where else to put them. This is a negative on the topic.
Picture 2: This is a photo taken from Seattle, Washington, where they also experience homelessness, but they are doing something to fix it. Their government spends about $1 billion fighting homelessness every year. This is a comparison.
Picture 3: NYC has been found to have the highest population rate since the Great Depression, with the inclusion of largest homeless family rate. For most of these families if they could not get into some sort of shelter they find themselves living out of their cars if they have one. This is a negative.
Picture 4: The have been non- profit organizations that have came together and started soup kitchens and food stands where homeless people are allowed to come and eat for free to ensure that they do not go hungry. This is a positive.
Picture 5: We have all see some homeless people in NYC sitting on the curbs with dogs. Well a couple of organizations came together and hosted a street clinic a couple of months ago for the health care of the animals and their homeless owners. Single people and families were invited where they were given supplies for their pets and themselves. This is a positive.
Picture 6: Right now NYC does have record breaking numbers for the amount of people in their homeless shelters. The shelters have cots and mats on the floor for families, couples and single people to sleep at night instead of in the cold or the heat of the streets. They are not allowed to live there, after a certain time everyone is asked to live but they do have the opportunity to get back on line and see if they can make it back in with the crowd of others waiting for their chance. This is a positive.
