My name is Miranda Sutton-Schott and I participated in the Living City Project CityGAP Program in New York City in Fall 2024.
While walking around Manhattan, I realized that I could not fill up my water bottle due to a lack of drinking fountains and water refill stations in the city. Instead, I would have to pay 3 dollars to fill up my reusable water bottle from a plastic bottle, which negated the whole purpose of having a reusable water bottle and contributed to both plastic production and waste.
Public water fountains address climate change by reducing the number of plastic bottles produced, consumed and discarded. They also contribute to public health by providing clean drinking water.
I am committed to making drinking water more accessible across the city, and in finding creative ways to make those fountains that already exist, more functional visible and accessible. This is what inspired me to create this website and to help people in New York City get free drinking water.
