Pre-Professional Integrative Health Fraternity
"Upsilon has changed my life in more ways than I can explain! Coming to the University of Arizona, I was worried about not finding community or finding people with similar health habits. Upsilon Theta Sigma exceeded my expectations and I am forever grateful for this newfound family!" - Alpha Class Member
Upsilon Theta Sigma was founded in October of 2023 at the University of Arizona by Audrey Lockman and Klein Powell, two Nutritional Science students in search of a further sense of community and developmental opportunities within the field of health and wellness. Unable to find exactly what they were looking for, they brought their ideas to life by forming the first Pre-professional Integrative Health Fraternity, meaning they provide ample professional development opportunities for Undergraduate students. They focus on the prevention aspect of chronic disease and illness through promotion of healthy lifestyle habits including diet, exercise, sleep, and more. They promote integrative healthcare at the personal and professional level by hosting professional networking, fundraising, philanthropy, and social events both on campus and within the Tucson community. Audrey and Klein founded Upsilon Theta Sigma, Alpha Chapter in hopes of providing students who have aspirations in the wellness field with a brotherhood to aid them in their academic and professional careers while furthering their knowledge and application of integrative wellness practices. Bridging the gap between scientific knowledge and using interpersonal skills to raise awareness about integrative health is uncharted territory in Greek life; they aim to make this accessible for anyone. They do not have Major/Minor requirements because integrative health is for everyone!
Integrative health is a comprehensive approach to health and well-being that considers all aspects of a person's life—physical, mental, emotional, social, and spiritual. Rather than focusing solely on treating symptoms or addressing specific health conditions, integrative health looks at the individual as a whole and aims to promote balance and harmony in all areas of life. The fraternity focuses on promoting the idea of using food as a form of medicine, a concept rooted in the idea that the foods we eat can be used as preventative care while significantly impacting our overall health. Upsilon Theta Sigma centers its work around this integrative approach to wellness to educate others on how to apply it in professional and personal settings.
Upsilon Theta Sigma uses its philanthropy and fundraising events to help fight food insecurity and malnutrition around Tucson, feed the homeless, promote mental health awareness, and collaborate with other groups of similar values to educate and promote healthy habits. Additionally, they focus on connecting with leaders of the healthcare field including local doctors(MD, ND, DO) dietitians/nutritionists, psychologists, health/life coaches, business owners, and more as well as attending health-related conferences for professional development. The organization creates professional development opportunities for its members through hosting networking events, providing workshops, and connecting with guest speakers. This fraternity builds students into informed, well-versed, and balanced individuals who are inspired to better healthcare through a holistic view.
