Recreational soccer is a soccer program primarily devoted to the enjoyment and development of soccer players without the emphasis on travel or high-level competition. The purpose of recreational soccer is to provide an opportunity for the participants to have fun, learn the sport and develop life skills, including a lifelong love of the game.
The main goals of recreational soccer:
Have fun: Players enjoy the game without the stress of winning or tryouts.
Learn basics: Participants practice the rules, skills, and drills of soccer.
Build skills: Players develop teamwork, sportsmanship, and a lifelong love for being active
UTSA offers multiple rec programs for all ages of players from Pre-K through 8th grade. A team uniform t-shirt is included with the registration fee and provided at the first practice or game.
Pre-K teams are mixed boys & girls teams for children ages 3 - 5 not yet entering kindergarten. To participate, a child must be age 3 before the season starts.
Research has shown that involvement in sports at a young age can help in developing basic motor and cognitive skills. The program uses fun-based soccer training activities that focus on developing a range of fundamental skills. Specific focus is given to:
Agility, balance, and coordination
Physical awareness
Movement patterns and sequences
Spatial awareness
Social skills
Listening skills
Practices for Pre-K soccer are held on Saturday mornings at 10:30 AM for 30-minutes, followed by a 30-minute game broken into four 5-minute quarters. Games are played in a 6 v. 6 format with no goalkeepers.
Shin guards are required. Cleats highly recommended for participation.
Kindergarten teams are mixed boys & girls teams for children age 5 currently enrolled in or eligible for kindergarten. To participate, a child must be age 5 before the season starts.
The goal of kindergarten recreational soccer is to introduce children to the sport in a fun, pressure-free environment. It focuses on teaching basic skills like running, kicking, and dribbling. It also helps kids learn social skills, teamwork, and good sportsmanship while staying physically active.
Objectives for this age group:
FUN and a positive environment.
Introduction to the basics of soccer.
Teach basic soccer skills; dribbling, simple moves, striking the ball with either foot.
Encourage fair play, good sportsmanship, self-confidence and coordination.

Grade 1 - 2
Grade 3 - 5
Grade 6 - 8
