The University of Wollongong Human Geography Society was founded in 2015 by PhD student Sophie-May Kerr. The society aims to build a sense of community among human geography students and staff within the Discipline of Geography and Sustainability.
In 2024, UOW HuGS was re-affiliated as the university's Human Geography and Sustainability Society. HuGS has strengthened its presence in the student community by supporting the Discipline of Geography and Sustainability with the Geography Welcome Event and the Geography Careers Breakfast, where staff, students, and alumni socialised and engaged in professional networking.
In the Spring session, with the addition of new club executives, HuGS was able to host fortnightly coffee catch-ups and assist in promoting the Geography Careers Breakfast. The HuGS executive team have been active both on and off campus, attending an AUSMAP Microplastics Training day and participating in a WATTLE Sustainability Symposium for Global Climate Change Week. HuGS also launched a weekly newsletter, where we share news, opportunities and events.
We look forward to creating the best possible experience for students and to continuing to build our amazing community.
The HuGS executive team would like to thank everyone who has been part of the journey to re-affiliation, especially the wonderful and supportive faculty in the Discipline of Geography and Sustainability, who have gone above and beyond to support the club, to every student that has attended any of our events, and to the wider community who have allowed us to share ideas and stories.

2025 we saw the continuation of HuGS as an affiliated club, participating in events such as O-Week and Clubs Day. The 2025 Geography Welcome Event and the Geography Careers Breakfast became our highest-attended events on the HuGS Calendar. We also ran textile upcycling events, doco night, Clean Up Australia Day, bushwalks, BBQs, and AUSMAP projects. We participated in UOW Open Day, running our popular textile upcycling event, which earned us Club of the Month in June 2025. Towards the end of 2025, we said goodbye to our departing execs and welcomed our new team into this fantastic club. I look forward to showing you what we have to offer here and beyond.
