Why learn guitar? Studies have shown that learning a musical instrument supports cognitive development. Children who study an instrument often perform better academically and demonstrate improved focus, discipline, and problem‑solving skills. At any age, learning an instrument can enhance fine‑motor skills, memory, and hand‑eye coordination. Moreover, maintaining a lifelong practice of music deepens one’s appreciation of the art, encourages continued neural development, and may help reduce the risk of cognitive decline. In short, learning music can make you smarter!
Do I need prior experience in music to take lessons? No. Along with guitar instruction, lessons include learning basic musicianship skills.
Materials Needed:
· Guitar: A steel‑ or nylon‑string acoustic guitar is preferred. If you have an electric guitar, you must provide your own amplification. For beginners, a full‑size nylon‑string guitar is often easier to start with, as it is less harsh on the fingertips. Nylon‑string guitars also offer greater versatility than steel‑string guitars. Steel‑string guitars are naturally louder and are best suited for primarily strumming. They typically have higher action, which requires more finger pressure and means students must build finger strength before playing comfortably.
· Picks (medium thickness)
· Footstool
· Notebook, blank chord chart sheet, and pencil.
· Depending on the style you wish to learn, I will recommend certain books to purchase. Most of the information will be given verbally in the lesson.
Policies
· Depending on your preference, I offer between 2 and 5 lessons per month. Note: you must pay for a minimum of two lessons per month.
· You may sign up for group lessons if there are at least 2 students registered. If only one person is signed up for a group lesson, you will be moved to individual lessons.
· Payment:
o At the beginning of the month, the teacher and student (or parent) discuss their availability.
o Once the lessons are scheduled, the student or parent must pay in person at the UFAC Music office or through our online payment system for the full month in advance. If you prefer, we also accept payments for a full semester (14 weeks).
o Cancellations: I understand life can be hectic and a student may need to occasionally cancel a lesson. For a lesson to be made up, I need 24-hour advanced notice. If the student cancels or does not show up without prior notice, the lesson will not be made up. I do make exceptions for medical or family emergencies.
o If the instructor cancels, they will find a make-up time for you. If there are no good options for a make-up lesson after an instructor cancellation or a student emergency, the missed lesson will be carried over to the next month.
o For students under the age of 18, I require the parent to be present for the duration of the lesson. For a group lesson, only one adult needs to be present. No exceptions.
