Word subreddits are communities dedicated to a specific word—whether normal, slang, or vulgar (excluding slurs, as per Reddit's policies). If you're new to creating word subreddits, follow this step-by-step guide to get started!
Before anything else, pick a word! With hundreds of thousands of words in the English language, the possibilities are endless. You can go for a standard word, a vulgar term, or a slang expression—whatever fits your vision.
Now that you’ve chosen a word, it’s time to name your subreddit and write a description. Follow this simple format:
🔹 Subreddit Name: r/TheWord[yourword]
🔹 Description: What’s your subreddit about? Is it a place to praise the word, spam it, or discuss its meanings? The choice is yours!
🔹 Extra Tip: You can add widgets to display images, provide extra info, and even link to other UWA word subreddits! However, save most of the detailed content for the wiki.
First impressions matter! Your icon and banner shape your subreddit’s identity.
🔹 Icon: Search online for an image that represents your word, then choose a stock image or design your own.
🔹 Banner: Design one using Canva, PowerPoint, or any graphic tool. Pick a font you like, spell out your subreddit’s word, and make it stand out!
Rules maintain order and prevent chaos, especially as your subreddit grows.
🔹 If your subreddit is small, don’t worry! Reddit provides default rules. However, as your community expands, consider adding custom rules based on its unique challenges. Example considerations for rules:
✅ Are members organizing raids?
✅ Are people being toxic or rude?
✅ Do you need to prevent spam or NSFW content?
Think about potential issues, then create rules to keep your community positive and fun!
Flairs help categorize content and allow members to express themselves.
🔹 Post Flair: Helps sort posts into different categories. Example flairs:
Question
Discussion
Announcement
Art/Music
General Post
Mega Thread (only allow moderators to use this flair!)
🔹 User Flair: Adds a unique touch to member profiles. Be creative! Here are some ideas:
Member
Contributor
Moderator
Subreddit Creator
💡 Pro Tip: If you don’t want to create predefined flairs, enable custom user flairs so members can set their own! Simply click the gear icon when setting up a flair and turn on "Allow user edits."
A wiki is a place to store detailed information, like history, rules, or guides (just like this one!).
How to Create a Wiki:
1️⃣ On PC or laptop, add a "Community Bookmarks" widget and enable the wiki.
2️⃣ Once enabled, members can click on the wiki to access its pages.
3️⃣ Go to Wiki > Index > Create a New Page to start writing.
🔹 Bold Text: Put two asterisks (**) before and after a text.
🔹 Italic Text: Put one asterisk (*) before and after a text.
🔹 Clickable Links: [text] (link)
(don't put spaces between the closing square bracket and opening parenthesis when you make a clickable link!!!!)
We hope this guide helps you build an amazing and thriving word community. Have fun, get creative, and remember—The UWA is here to support you! 🌍🔥
