"I have already joined myself in marriage to a husband, namely the Kingdom of England"
-Elizabeth 1 of England
The national flag of the United Kingdom is known as the Union Flag, or Union Jack. It gets its name because it combines the crosses of the three countries that are united under one Sovereign - England and Wales, Scotland, and Ireland. But, only Northern Ireland has been part of the United Kingdom since 1921. The red color represents England and courage, the white represents Scotland and purity, and the blue represents Ireland and loyalty. The flag was first created in 1606, originally featuring only the English and Scottish flags. However, it was later amended in 1801 to include the cross of St. Patrick, representing Ireland.
