“Only in the last 140 years has the state claimed the exclusive right to determine who is and is not married to whom, and its mechanism for usurping that right from communities, families, and individuals has been the institution of the marriage license” (McWhorter, 2009, p. 316).
The WHITE Standard
Historically White marriages are seen as the 'norm' in society, this section examines the nuances within this category and how it intersects with other identities.
The eugenic ideology of "normalizing white marriage" can be understood in different contexts, but it often relates to historical or current efforts to uphold or prioritize marriages between individuals perceived as belonging to the "white" racial category. This concept is controversial because it implies favoring or promoting relationships based on race or ability status, which can perpetuate racial hierarchies and discrimination.
Early in the US eugenics movement marriage restrictions and licensing served as a tool of public education and the efforts were mostly symbolic (McWhorter, 2009). Sex was strongly encouraged for those deemed eugenically superior.
By the mid-19th century, scientific evidence was turning against basic eugenic principles yet no scientist stood up to relax or remove marriage restrictions (McWhorter, 2009).
For the first two-thirds of the 20th century, the Normal Family could not be black (McWhorter, 2009). There are over 9,000 marriage records from New Haven, USA between 1870 and 1940, yet only 5 weddings are documented between Blacks and Whites (Provost, 2023).
Overall, the genealogy of marriage reflects a complex interplay of legal, cultural, and social forces. It underscores the ongoing fight for equality and recognition of relationships worldwide.

Lavender marriage is a marriage of convenience between a male and female when one or both of them is looking to conceal their original sexual orientation. One of them or both would be non-heterosexual. This is a side effect of discrimination against the LGBTQIA+ community.
People entering lavender marriages are essentially living a double life which can lead to mental health crises and other issues. Women in these marriages tend to suffer more given the patriarchal institution of marriage with pressures of childbirth and other societal expectations. In contrast, many queer individuals see this as the only option to take control of their life (James, 2023).
