Set-up:
This is definitely the toughest part!
My rolling TV cart is in the music closet. Roll it to the front of the stage, and use the long extension cord near the metal shelves on stage. It should be between the curtain and the wall. Connect the power strip on the cart to the extension cord, then connect the HDMI and charging cables to your laptop. You may need to manually turn the TV on, but Then that's it!

Today, you'll be meeting the instruments and musicians of The President's Own Marine Band. This band is based in Washington, D.C.. The performers are all members of the US Marine Corps, but their job is to represent our country through cultural showcasing - presenting the very best of us through music.
Most military musicians go through the same Basic Training as non-musician enlisted soldiers, 8 to 13 weeks of rigorous physical and mental training. There are only two exceptions to this - the musicians of The President's Own Marine Band in D.C. and The United States Coast Guard Band in New London, Connecticut. That means the two most competitive bands to get into, and therefore the highest level band jobs in the country, exist only in our nation's capitol and here in our own state.
I hope you enjoy this video that The President's Own Marine Band put together for us to watch.
As always, remember our three rules for listening to music:
1. We sit still.
2. We sit silently.
3. We clap at the end.
I look forward to hearing that all of you were GREAT virtual audience members!!!
4th & 5th Grade Chorus (11:15)
Please ask Mrs. Z-B's students to bring colored pencils or crayons, but only if they get them quickly. If they take too long, they can just use the pencils on my rolling cart.
I attempted to remote-print packets for this. Hopefully that worked!!!! (I think it's possible because I did it by accident from North Carolina last spring.) If not, I emailed the PDF to Mrs. Powers and Mr. J.
1. Your Album - Pick 5 songs to put on an album. Write the songs, then on the next page, name your album and draw a cover.
2. Mindful Music Doodles - Do this twice. Listen to this song while doodling on the third page of the packet, then listen to this song while doodling on the fourth page.
3. Recommendations - Follow the directions for the fifth and sixth pages.
Preschool, Kindergarten, and 1st Grade (2:15)
The Dance Party Playlist!!!
For the first song (Choose Your Fighter by Ava Max, from the Barbie movie), it's a true Dance Party. Keep everybody up and moving, make sure we're not knocking our heads against things, and have fun.
For the second song (Saxophone Horse, by David Flavin and Roland Rudzitis), everybody stands in a circle and dances. They should be able to show you, but it's mostly hands up, hands down, or hands to the side with some wiggles throughout.
For the third song (Waltz from the Prince and the Mermaid Suite, by William Grant Still), we pretend to play violin, viola, and cello, optionally using drum sticks or blue rhythm sticks as bows.
For the fourth song (Black Ash from Splinter, by Mark Mellits), we pretend to play oboe, clarinet, saxophone, bass clarinet, and the BEST instrument, bassoon, also optionally using drum sticks or blue rhythm sticks.
Here is a direct link if the video below doesn't load.
These are all suggestions - and will take up more time than you have, so you can pick and choose what you'd like to do.
1. Poison Pattern, using the blue rhythm sticks (top of the tall rolling cart): Each student needs two sticks. The leader will play a four-beat pattern, some combination of "beet," "cher-ry," and "shh." (Example: Beet, Cher-ry, Cher-ry, Shh.") Everyone will do it together once. Now, that's the poison pattern and the game begins. Everybody repeats after the leader unless it's the poison pattern. There are two ways to get out: Repeat the poison pattern (even one note of it!), or fail to repeat a non-poison pattern.
2. Alphabet practice: I find some way to get them all saying "A B C D E F G A." Sometimes we roll a ball around and whoever gets the ball says those letters, sometimes I time them to see how quickly they can go around and have everybody do it, all depends on the day.
3. Egg shakers (top of the tall rolling cart): Dynamics (you'll have to keep reminding them, but I use forte-strong, mezzo-medium, and piano-soft), freeze games, follow the leader, all sorts of things. You can make ANYTHING up. THAT BEING SAID, I do have a specific way of handing out eggs. Students need to correctly and politely ask for their eggs. They need to say the color and the word please, and then you hand them the egg they chose. They should not reach into the bins themselves. This is less about music and more about classroom management and raising good humans. :-)
4. Sand scrapers (side of the tall rolling cart): Same thing as egg shakers, but I typically just have the kids grab them from the bin as I walk around. Because of how large the class is, I don't have enough of these, so supplement with anything else on that side of the rolling cart.
5. Listening - here's a video of me playing (Shuh-hair-uh-zod) Scheherazade! This piece is based on three of the 1,001 stories Scheherazade told the Sultan. This part is called The Tale of the Kalendar Prince. A kalendar prince is a prince who was once beautiful, beloved, rich, and famous, but has found himself poor and alone. In this solo, the kalendar prince remembers his old life, balancing the two very different versions of himself.
First, read that to them, then play the video. (It's short - 46 seconds.) Then ask them to imagine a prince as they listen to it again. After playing it a 2nd time, ask them questions about tempo (fast or slow?), dynamics (loud or soft?), and range (high or low?). Then ask them to listen one more time and re-imagine the prince as somebody else.
6. Mr. Rob and Prodigies! Here are some options. You will need to log in to Prodigies - Mrs. Powers and Mr. J have my password list.
-Best Friends (C and G) - Use the teal and red boomwhackers (side of the tall rolling cart)
-Beethoven's 5th with Ms. Sam (C and G) - Use the same boomwhackers
-Sweet Beats - Beet and Cherry - Collect boomwhackers before this
