9/28: Africa by Toto, played on Boomwhackers by Harvard's Boomwhacker club, THUD.
10/5: Five on Five, a piece for five percussionists playing the marimba (large wooden xylophone). Two different recordings - the first, by NCAT's University Band Percussion, is longer and was played for the middle school; and the second, by the LaGrange College Percussion Ensemble, is shorter and was played for the elementary school.
10/19: Based on the USA Addams Family Movie Night, we watched the Saber Mazurka from the movie, and then a video about what the Mazurka is, as well as a recording of one Frederic Chopin's Mazurkas for solo piano.
10/26: In the Hall of the Mountain King by Edvard Grieg, with a Line Rider video; The Sorcerer's Apprentice by Paul Daukas, from the Disney movie Fantasia.
11/2: Overture to Giacchino Rossin's The Barber of Seville, with a Line Rider video, a live video recording of the St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra, and then a cute arrangement for two melodicas (kazzoo+piano, basically) by the Melodica Men.
11/9: Overture to Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Marriage of Figaro, with a Line Rider video, and then an absolutely incredible, standard-setting recording by the Cleveland Orchestra with legendary conductor George Szell. PLEASE NOTE: In contrast to the impeccable Cleveland recording, the music in the Line Rider video is terrible. It is a MIDI recording (computer-generated) and it is WAY too slow. I played this video with the playback speed set to 1.25x to make it slightly better.
11/9: Are You Sleeping as a cleverly recorded round.
11/16: John Williams' Harry Potter, with a Line Rider video, and then a fantastic live recording from the BBC Proms.
11/23: Jean Sibelius' Finlandia, with a Line Rider video, a video discussing the historical context, a version for men's chorus, and a humorous-but-musically-valuable recording of the piece being played by four electric toothbrushes (yes, I am serious - it's amazing).
11/30: Florence Price's Juba Dance from her Symphony No. 1 in e minor, with a partial video recording of the Minnesota Orchestra, an introduction to Florence Price and the Juba Dance from Tennessee-based composer Margaret Campbelle-Holman, and an incredible audio-only recording of the complete movement by the Fort Smith Symphony.
12/7: Valerie Coleman's Umoja, with a recording from the Imani Winds (NYC Wind Quintet Valerie started), a discussion by the composer about the new orchestral version, and the New York Philharmonic in a layered video.
1/4: The Tale of the Kalendar Prince from Nicolai Rimsky-Korsikov's Scheherazade.
1/11: The Little Ugly Girl and Conversations of the Beauty and the Beast from Maurice Ravel's Mother Goose Suite.
1/25: James Weldon Johnson's and J. Rosamun Johnson's Lift Ev'ry Voice And Song, with recordings by Alicia Keys, the Roxbury (MA) Latin Glee Club, and Jada Holliday from Baylor University
2/8: Wade in the Water, with recordings by Apollo's Fire (concert performance), Sweet Honey in the Rock (traditional rendition), Alvin Ailey Dance(with Afro-Cuban Drumming), and The Spirituals Choir (modern gospel).
2/8: Margaret Bonds' arrangement of Hold On, with recordings by Lara Downes (piano) and DEM Trio (male vocal trio).
2/25: Florence Price's Fantasie Negre No. 2, performed by Lara Downes, and the Work Song from William Grant Still's From The Delta, with Mr. LaMonica conducting Connecticut's Southern Region High School Band
NOTE: I can't post the recording on YouTube, but you can view it with this link.
3/1: Larry Sings the Blues from Veggie Tales*, Elvis Presley's 1956 cover of Hound Dog, and Meghan Trainor's Dance Like Yo Daddy (including a fun kids' fitness version!).
*No religious content from Veggie Tales was used.
3/8: Willie Mae "Big Mama" Thornton's 1952 recording of the original Hound Dog and a live performance from 1965, and her recording of Wade in the Water.
Fun and informative videos, more on the longer side for a family movie night.
