Understanding the Original Substance of the Divine Principle (often abbreviated as OSDP).
The ‘Original Substance of the Divine Principle’ (often referred to as OSDP or Bon-che-ron in Korean) is not a separate book from the Divine Principle, but rather a specific educational curriculum taught intensively by Reverend Moon at the end of his life (2011-2012).
What is the Original Substance of the Divine Principle?
It is the transition from the Word (Logic) to the Flesh (Reality).
The Text: Explains God's laws.
The Substance: Is the life of True Parents who embodied those laws.
The Goal: For us to stop analyzing the truth and start being the truth, by inheriting the heart and lineage of God.
In the theology of the Family Federation, the Divine Principle is the revelation that explains the laws of God’s creation and the history of human restoration. However, in the later years of his ministry, the Reverend Sun Myung Moon placed a heavy emphasis on a concept known as The Original Substance of the Divine Principle (OSDP) which is a crucial evolution in Unification theology.
"God exists in two forms. The ‘God of the Night’ is God in His invisible essence (the Spirit). The ‘God of the Day’ is the True Parents who have taken on a substantial form on earth (the Body). 1. The Word vs. The Substance
To understand OSDP, we must distinguish between the Word (Logos) and the Substance (Incarnation).
The Divine Principle (The Map): This is the logic, the theory, and the explanation of God's will. It appeals to the intellect and explains how God works.
The Original Substance (The Territory): This is the Word made flesh. It is not written on paper, but embodied in a human personality.
The core teaching of OSDP is that truth is not fully realized until it takes human form. Just as a blueprint is useless without the building, the Principle is incomplete until it is substantialized in a person.
2. True Parents as the "Original Substance"
The "Original Substance" is not a new theory; it is a reference to True Parents.
For thousands of years, religious history moved through the era of laws and scriptures. However, the ultimate goal of God was not a book, but a family. The Reverend and Mrs. Moon taught that their lives—their specific course, their victory over suffering, and their establishment of a True Family—constitute the Original Substance.
Therefore, studying the OSDP means studying the life and heart of True Parents as the visible model of the invisible God.
3. The Core Teachings of OSDP
When the OSDP curriculum was formalized (around 2008–2011), it emphasized specific themes designed to bridge the gap between knowing and being:
Resemblance: Just as the body resembles the mind, human beings are created to be the visible "Original Substance" of the invisible God.
Absolute Sexual Ethics: OSDP places a heavy emphasis on the sanctity of the bloodline. It teaches that the "sexual organ" is the most holy place, the palace of love, life, and lineage. To possess the "Original Substance" is to maintain absolute purity before marriage and absolute fidelity within marriage.
The Settlement of the Noon-Day Sun: Living a life with no shadows (no secrets, no sin), fully aligned with God's vertical standard.
4. The Goal: Becoming the Substance
Why is this distinction important for us today?
If we only study the text of the Divine Principle, we become scholars. But if we inherit the Original Substance, we become owners.
The goal of the Original Substance of the Divine Principle is to move the believer from the position of a student reading a map to a child walking the path. It is the call to become a "Little True Parent"—someone who doesn't just speak the truth, but whose very life is the truth.
In the era of Cheon Il Guk, we are called not just to believe in the Word, but to become the substance of it.
