My name is Rose Howell (she/her), I am a 10th grader at Burlington High School. I got involved in the Underground workshop through my civics class in freshman year. I ended up submitting a commentary I wrote on punitive action in schools in relation to social media, and was invited to join the team. Since then I've loved writing, conducting interviews, giving feedback, and editing other pieces.
In addition to journalism, I love to run, ski, and make art. I am involved in a few different outreach and advocacy clubs at my school and around Burlington as well.
My name is Harmony (she/her), and I am a freshman at Harwood Union High School. I was told about the Underground Workshop by a member of my cross country team, and since I love writing and have been in journalism clubs in the past, I was immediately inclined to join. My first Underground Workshop article was about Harwood’s exchange students’ experiences in Vermont, and it made me realize how much I enjoy the interview process for journalism. I enjoy many literary mediums, and the Underground Workshop has allowed me to learn more about journalism. I would like to pursue a career involving writing and public speaking. When I am not writing, I enjoy running in the forest, reading, singing, swimming in icy waters, and baking maple syrup-laden treats.
My name is Adelle MacDowell (they/them), and I’m a sophomore at Middlebury College. I joined the Underground Workshop in fall 2020, my junior year of high school. I’ve been interested in journalism since middle school and I co-founded my high school newspaper in 9th grade. I was excited to connect with other youth journalists through the Underground Workshop and work on collaborative projects across the state. The first article I wrote for the Workshop was about high school custodians during the pandemic, and that article and other projects I’ve done with the Underground Workshop has shown me the unique access students have to reporting from inside schools.
At Middlebury, I’m majoring in Earth and Climate Sciences and working as a layout editor for the Middlebury Campus. I like to spend my free time running, skiing at the Snow Bowl, and making art with my friends.
My name is Molly Kane (she/her) and I am a junior at Colchester High School. I was introduced to the Underground Workshop by my teacher and I officially became a member in the fall of 2022.
In my free time I like to play music, row on the lake and ski in the mountains. My favorite instrument is the guitar. I also participate in several clubs at my school, including theater, where I help design the sets and lighting.
My name is Anna Hoppe (she/her). I started writing for my high school paper and the Underground Workshop in the spring of 2022 after looking for a way to connect with my greater community and spark important conversations around issues like climate change, like with the Underground Workshop’s Climate Report Card project. This year, as one of the students leading the Underground Workshop, I'm excited to help other students learn about the power of journalism.
I graduated from Essex High School in 2023. I am currently a first-year at the University of Vermont, where I'm majoring in environmental science. In the future, I hope to combine my passions for science and journalism to help make scientific information accessible to the public.
In my free time, I enjoy reading, baking, hiking and kayaking.
My name is Cecilia Luce (she/her). I am a senior at Thetford Academy, and I joined the Underground Workshop in the fall of 2021. Since then, I have worked on a number of my own pieces, and guided other reporters through the journalistic process as an editor. I plan to study journalism and environmental science at Northwestern University, with the eventual goal of becoming a climate reporter--writing is my chosen form of activism, and I strongly believe in the combined power of words and science. Since my school doesn't have a newspaper, I'm grateful for the opportunities that the UW has given me.
In my free time, I enjoy skiing, running, musical theatre, and being outdoors as much as possible.
